We are a fast-growing virtual tenant rights law firm dedicated to changing lives—one tenant at a time. We help California tenants who have been illegally evicted, discriminated against, harassed, or forced to endure uninhabitable living conditions recover money from their landlords. We are seeking a rock-star Managing Attorney & General Counsel who can hit the ground running.
The primary responsibilities of the Managing Attorney & General Counsel are to oversee and directly supervise the Legal Team; ensure that all Legal Team members are meeting or exceeding performance expectations; recommend, develop, and implement systems that optimize case management, reduce turnaround times, and enhance client satisfaction; and serve as the firm’s General Counsel, managing risk by limiting escalated matters and overseeing responses to client complaints, threats of claims, and other legal issues. This position will be responsible for critically important work, including:
- Hosting Daily and Weekly Meetings with the Legal Team.
- Overseeing the ongoing continuing legal education of all Handling Attorneys.
- Overseeing the provision of all legal services, ensuring adequate coverage for legal proceedings, and guiding other team members.
- Ensuring competent provision of legal services by the Legal Team.
- Hewing to the firm’s protocols for preparing for mediations and trials, ensuring all matters are thoroughly worked up to maximize each matter’s value.
- Managing and closely monitoring all trials in a supervisory and advisory capacity, ensuring that all Trials have Trial Counsel serving as first chair.
- Recording and entering daily productive time into the firm’s case management software.
- Tracking weekly Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for this position.
- In conjunction and consultation with the Executive Team, evaluating the Legal Team and making recommendations for recruitment, hiring, promotion, and termination.
- Ensuring at all times that the Legal Team is running efficiently and profitably.
- Managing the creation, maintenance, and accuracy of all legal team policies, procedures, processes, checklists, templates, forms, etc.
- Attending Daily Executive Team Huddles.
- Attending Weekly Executive Team Meetings, Weekly Team Meetings, Weekly Lunch & Learns.
- Overseeing Quarterly Action Planning Meetings with all Handling Attorneys.
- Collaborating with the Intake Attorney to ensure that the firm prosecutes only high-quality, high-value cases.
- Overseeing the withdrawal of the firm from Litigation Matters where permitted and appropriate under the California Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Proactively advising the CEO of any potential legal claims or bar complaints against Legal Team members and taking steps to mitigate risks.
- Resolving any potential or actual claims against the firm within the allotted budget.

We are seeking a highly experienced Managing Attorney & General Counsel with a proven track record of leading at least six attorneys and experience in an executive role at a company or firm with a minimum revenue of $5 million (or equivalent experience). The Managing Attorney & General Counsel should have a successful history of supervising and training legal teams, demonstrating exceptional legal acumen through civil litigation experience.
The Managing Attorney & General Counsel must be an active member of the State Bar of California with a discipline-free record. Proficiency in legal technology is essential, including familiarity with the Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, OneDrive), Adobe Acrobat Pro, Clio Manage, Lawmatics, Keeper Security, and Zoom. The ability to quickly adapt to new technologies is also a valuable asset. Strong legal research and writing skills are essential, with a demonstrated ability to effectively utilize Westlaw.

This is a full-time job, and you absolutely must be able to work for at least forty hours per week. Work will be performed 100% virtually. Salary depends on experience. Total compensation includes bonuses tied to the achievement of objective quarterly milestones (in full compliance with California law and the California Rules of Professional Conduct); open (unlimited) PTO; health, dental, and vision benefits starting within ninety days of full-time employment; paid holidays (ten days per year) and sick leave in accordance with state law; payment of California State Bar annual fees and any needed CLE courses to ensure compliance; and a 401(k) retirement plan with a mandatory employer contribution.
