Job Requirements / Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs routine intake procedures such as height, weight, temperature, pulse and blood pressure readings;
Assists with laboratory procedures and responsible to give blood draws to patients;
Responsible to give vaccines and injections to patients;
Assists with office procedures;
Responsibility for assisting Nurse with triage of clients and transfer of charts to appropriate provider;
Assists medical providers with examination and treatment of patients;
Relieves other departments as indicated as time permits;
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Dispenses oral, inhalation, and topical medications to patients
Observes patients for drug reactions and reports any problems to Charge nurse
Monitors patient’s vital signs, calculate medication dosages, and stocks the medication cart
Records what medications and dosages were given for the day
Performs routine procedures under established protocols including phlebotomy and electrocardiograms
Manages and maintains pharmacy stocks of medicine and medical supplies
Practices safety, environmental and infection control methods
Specific Functions
Obtains routine temperature, pulse, respiration, height and weight as well as blood pressure readings at first encounter;
Responsible for assisting with maintenance of medical and laboratory equipment and for assisting with quality controls on laboratory equipment;
Responsible for routine laboratory procedures including but not limited to various dipsticks, urinalysis, hematocrit, glucose screening, gram stains, and other procedures as approved by health center policies and Jail Standards.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods.
Dispose of blood or other bio-hazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer.
Education and Experience:
High School graduate or equivalent.
Medical Assistant/Certified Medical Assistant course training with certificate of graduation and proof of Certified Medical Assistant license.
On-the-job training, previous experience preferred.
Personal maturity, cooperation, ability to communicate clearly.
Working Conditions:
Sits and walks throughout the day.
May be exposed to infection and contagious diseases, and unpleasant patient or unit elements.
Handles emergency or crisis situations.
Subject to many interruptions.
Must be able to function in a high stress environment.
Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people
Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions
Requires dealing with unpleasant, angry, or discourteous people and other conflict situations.
