CHIEF ENGINEER Job Function:
The Towboat Chief Engineer maintains all major and minor vessel equipment, including main engines, generator engine, electrical systems, hydraulics, air compressors, centrifuges, water systems, sewer systems, heating and cooling systems, and alarm systems. The Chief Engineer is required to perform maintenance on barge equipment and works under the supervision of the Master, except during shipyard periods, major renovations, and overhauls.
CHIEF ENGINEER Job Duties:
- Operates and/or maintains main engines, generator engine, electrical systems, hydraulics, air compressor, centrifuges, water system, sewer systems, heating and cooling systems, and alarm systems.
- Periodically checks all equipment, maintains oil, fuel and water levels, monitors temperatures and pressures.
- Maintains proper operation of basic systems such as electrical, sewage, heating and cooling, and winches.
- Disassembles machinery, makes repairs, and reassembles.
Physical Requirements, Demands and Working Conditions:
Tasks include but are not limited to walking with and/or carrying tools, lifting hoses, climbing ladders, and working in slippery and confined spaces. The Chief Engineer must be able to lift weights ranging from 0 to 230 lbs, and work in extreme temperatures and noise levels.
Additional Responsibilities and Requirements:
- Learning and Training: Learns operations of the vessel and equipment, provides training to the Assistant Engineer, and stays updated on machinery troubleshooting and repair.
- Safety: Participates in safety meetings, maintains cleanliness and order in workspaces, and ensures safety equipment is used properly.
- Inspecting, Record-Keeping and Verifying: Follows maintenance schedules, inspects equipment, keeps records of operations and repairs, and manages inventory.
General Qualifications:
The candidate must possess strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and reliably. They should be able to work under pressure, adhere to regulations, and be a team player. A valid Driver's License is required, and candidates must be drug and alcohol-free while on company property.

Pay: $381.00 - $500.00 per day
