Job Summary: The Interim Director, Academic Human Resources, innovates, delivers, and collaborates on Academic Human Resources functions by supporting the Provost Office. They will be a thought-partner to the Provost, Deans, and the Human Resources department. This role is a full-service academic human resources role supporting all human resources related functions and will supervise Human Resources Business Partners at the colleges. This position will report jointly to Human Resources leadership and the Provost.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Successful strategies with providing Human Resources support in a multi-stakeholder organization across multiple locations.
  • Risk, control, and compliance operating models in the Human Resources space.
  • Human resources management and practices. Thorough knowledge of human resources concepts, policies and procedures, employment practices, labor relations, salary administration, training and other areas of human resources. Learning strategies and blended learning approaches to support a learner-centric experience.
  • Academic personnel processes related to recruitment, appointment, and salary review.
  • Human resources management system and/or other related business software programs and systems. Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems and applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Ability to incorporate computer technology to improve processes.
  • EEO, Title IX, and civil rights compliance monitoring, technology, trend forecasting, and stakeholder collaboration.
  • Organizational policies and procedures, knowledge of functional area and understands how work may affect other areas. Proven experience in effectively and accurately interpreting, developing, implementing, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Appropriate administrative and disciplinary actions to manage policy compliance in organized and non-organized areas. Use professional judgment in situations for which there are no established criteria or standards or where answers to problems are not readily apparent and initiate action and solutions. Utilize effective negotiation skills in the performance of functions to produce a satisfactory outcome for all parties concerned.
  • Analytical, active listening, and critical thinking skills. Strong analytical and conceptual abilities to independently evaluate complex issues, formulate options, and develop solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Practices and strategies for investigation, negotiation, alternative dispute resolution, mediation, and arbitration.
  • Strategies identifying and building cross-functional partnerships to understand challenges.

  • Research techniques, data mining practices, and people analytics strategies.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of related work experience OR Master’s Degree/Juris Doctorate/Doctorate Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of related work experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience. Supervisory experience required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partners closely with peers and stakeholders across the WesternU to assess existing Academic Human Resources programs, processes, and practices; identify gaps and inefficiencies, and innovate to enhance the academic employee experience by aligning people proposition.
  • Guides compensation, classification, employee/labor relations, performance management, benefits, organizational planning, and training and development aspects within academic human resources. Partners closely with Human Resources functional managers as needed.
  • Collaborates with peers and stakeholders in recruiting, motivating and leading staff; in analyzing work flow and determining optimal staff configurations to meet operational and service needs; and in resolving performance problems and personnel issues. Strong supervisory skills.
  • Collects and analyzes data, interpret policies and procedures, and apply them to routine as well as unique and complex situations. Strong demonstrated experience and proven ability to establish or recommend alternative solutions. Expertise to develop innovative approaches, techniques, and procedures to provide more efficient and responsive services.
  • Drive and analyze relevant metrics and data to track key performance indicators, identify trends, and make data-driven recommendations for process optimization and resource allocation. Analyze turnover trends and make recommendations for retention strategies.
  • Collaborate with college directors of operations and university Human Resources to ensure data integrity and reporting.
  • Partners with university visa office, university human resources and finance offices to ensure transparency, cross-collaboration, and results-oriented solutions.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Demonstrated strong communication skills for group activities including expressing ideas effectively, seeking and respecting the opinions of others, active listening and willingness to share ideas; Draft and create correspondence, templates and other forms of communication protocols.
  • Leads, assesses, and mentors team members to ensure excellent daily operations and inspire creativity.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of flexibility and innovation to seek alternative solutions to unique or complex problems and issues.
  • Resolves complex employee relations and disputes promptly and with diplomacy.
  • Advises on complex personnel situations and utilizes counseling techniques with ability to act as a facilitator, exercise diplomacy, tact, professionalism, responsiveness, a high degree of flexibility, and solve concerns between individuals in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Advises on enhancements and gaps of existing Human Resources and impacted policies/procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Standard business hours. Evenings or weekends as needed.

Expected Pay Scale: Minimum: $150,000.00; Maximum: $165,000.00
