Job Summary
To direct immediate provision of pupil transportation services in assigned areas. To assist the Executive Director in functions of the school system related to pupil transportation. To assume the duties of the Executive Director in the event of his or her absence. Under direction of the Executive Director of Transportation Services, this role directs and manages all day-to-day operations of Metro Nashville Public Schools pupil transportation. Specific focus will be given to ensure the establishment of efficient bus routes, recruitment and training of qualified drivers, responsive dispatching, well maintained and timely service of all district fleet, evaluation of transportation managers and expedited resolution of student transportation concerns.


What you will do

  • Ongoing review of the transportation system focusing on increasing effectiveness, efficiency and equitable execution of district transportation policies.
  • Monitor and master use of transportation technology tools in order to effectively administer and coordinate all activities related to school transportation.
  • Maintain good working relationships with local Metro Government authorities to ensure the safety and security of student transportation.
  • Review industry innovations along with local, state and federal transportation guidelines on a regular basis and recommend necessary changes and/or modifications to district policy and specific departmental processes as required.
  • Maximize use of multiple communication methods to ensure effective communication between schools, central office and transportation team in ensuring school bus safety.
  • Acknowledge and follow up with supervisors regarding complaints from parents, school administrators, homeowners and the general public. Keep Executive Director in the loop on urgent issues.
  • Collect necessary data to drive improvements and to make immediate operational adjustments which ensure safe and timely services.
  • Develop and maintain a collection of pertinent transportation industry materials and management articles intended to build the capacity of managers to lead and manage in an effort to exceed expectations.
  • Assist in the preparation of budget estimates and reports as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Develop status reports on operations and assist in the preparation of an annual Transportation Report.
  • Inform school principals, department leads and other stakeholders regarding all changes to policies and guidelines concerning school transportation which impacts their work.
  • Support the promotion of safety for students who walk to and from school in collaboration with district and community programs.
  • Act in the absence of the Executive Director.
  • Investigate problems and concerns with internal and external clients pertaining to transportation safety issues, stop location, route timing and behavior.
  • Assist in development of communications to all stakeholders; parents/families, students, school administrators, district departments and the general public.
  • Address human resource needs and concerns in collaboration with the Human Resource department and departmental employees.
  • Assist in contract negotiations and RFP process to ensure alignment with overall student and district operational needs.
  • Make decisions concerning service to new subdivisions and with regard to road access.

Education Qualifications

  • MBA Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Management experience must include routing, budgeting and information technology support Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Student Transportation Software (Tyler, GeoReff, Synovia).
  • Ability to ensure state reporting guidelines are met.
  • Proficiency in Student Information Systems applications and operation.
  • Effective leadership, management and team building skills.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with a myriad of stakeholders.

Starting At: $112,735.07


Salaries are determined by factors relevant to the position which may include education, experience, and other qualifications. Final compensation decisions are made at the discretion of MNPS in alignment with organizational policies and procedures. The stated salary range for certificated teaching positions is calculated based on 201 days and should be viewed as a reference. All provided salary ranges serve as a general guideline.
