JOB SUMMARY

Inspire youth and camp staff to embrace and explore nature while building core values, character, self-confidence, and lasting relationships in a safe, positive environment. The Director of Program Operations plans, organizes, and implements the summer camp program, trip programs and year-round family programs in alignment with Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya’s staff expectations, policies and procedures, child management and abuse prevention guidelines, goals, and mission. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the summer camp program, trips and family programs. They are responsible for parent communication, camper behavior management, schedule of activities, program quality assessment, staff evaluation, and coordination of camp transportation. The Director of Program Operations is actively engaged with campers and staff and spends time both outdoors and working in the camp office. This position also oversees the policies and practices of all programing within camping services including day camp and outdoor education. The Director of Program Operations oversees the implementation of accreditation standards for the ACA and State Licensing for YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya and provides advice and support for the director of YMCA Camp Wabansi for their ACA accreditation.

YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya is a Resident Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Center owned and operated by the Greater Green Bay YMCA. It is part of a mission based Y organization focused on providing unique and valuable experiences to campers ages 7-17. The Mission of our organization is “to put Christian principles into practice through programs the build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all”.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain a positive camp culture based on the Four Core Values of the YMCA and the YMCA Mission.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers and staff.
  • Hire, onboard, train, develop, engage, and retain summer camp team members (counselors, office manager, assistant directors, trip staff and program staff).
  • Work with the Executive Director of Camping Services to monitor the camp budget and consistently meet financial and program growth goals.
  • In the event of an emergency you will serve as a first responder (responding, reporting, and preventing.)
  • Support staff, campers, and parents by building and maintaining authentic and positive relationships.
  • Assist in marketing efforts for summer camp and family programs (events, brochure design, website management, etc.) to meet registration goals.
  • Develop and implement innovative, engaging, and efficient programs to provide a unique and competitive experience.
  • Support fundraising initiatives for Camping Services.
  • Plan, prepare, staff and run the summer program and family programs at YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya. Monitor the program for quality and impact.
  • Communicate with parents, and guests consistently and effectively (pre-event emails, surveys, welcome packets, etc.).
  • Prepare and implement policies and procedures for camping services that are in alignment with ACA accreditation and state licensing standards.
  • Prepare trip itineraries and oversee the trip team for overnight tripping programs.
  • Prepare and implement summer staff training.
  • Support the Outdoor Education Program as needed if they are short staffed.
  • Oversee the total cleanup of camp after each program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Act according to facility protocol to ensure safety of all staff, children and volunteers which includes:
    • Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening tools to screen for abuse risk.
    • Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.
    • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with children.
    • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
    • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
    • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
    • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
    • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect children from abuse.
    • Report essential abuse risk management information to VP, Chief People Officer & Risk Management Officer.

SKILLS AND TRAINING

  • Must be at least 25 years old according to ACA regulations.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. At least 2 years related experience and 2 years supervisory experience is required (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Requires critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to prioritize workloads to meet timelines and goals.
  • Excellent telephone, face to face, and written communication skills tailored to the appropriate audience are essential.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheets, word processing, and the ability to learn customized software packages quickly is required.
  • Knowledge of ACA safety standards required.
  • Lifeguarding certification including CPR, First Aid and AED required; training provided.
  • In addition to a Boaters License, must possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as defined by the Greater Green Bay YMCA policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Every day is different. The work consists of very active, outdoor days during the summer season and mellow office days or remote work during the off season. Work in all types of weather including precipitation and extreme hot and cold temperatures. Requires the ability to move freely including but not limited to running, hiking, boating, biking, and swimming. The ability to lift and move equipment, and use camp tools is required. As a safety responder, the ability to crouch, stoop, kneel, move quickly, and/or lift at least 30 pounds will be necessary.

HOUSING AND WORK REQUIREMENTS

This position has exclusive onsite housing in a private cabin. The YMCA covers all utilities for this house. The Director of Program Operations is required to live onsite during the summer program and family program weekends. The Summer Program Operates June – August. The Family Program Weekends are typically in January, May, September and October. As we continue to grow in our programming more weekend program duties may be required. This position can work remotely when programs are not in operation. The exact extent of this option needs to be finalized with the Executive Director of Camping Services but at a minimum the Director of Program Operations will need to work onsite at YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya at least 1 week per month on non-program operation months (January, February, March, November, and December).
