The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the IBD Center Director and Associate Director and members of the interdisciplinary GI team. Approximately 50% (5 clinical sessions per week) of this time will be spent in direct patient care of children with IBD and other gastrointestinal disorders through an urgent intake clinic, both in Boston and in our outreach clinics. The remainder of the role will be focused on patient education, support of our very early onset IBD program, and support for patients participating in clinical studies.
  • Functioning with a high level of independence in caring for children and young adults with Crohn Disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Showing innovation and leadership in developing and recommending policies and procedures to improve the quality, family-centeredness and cost-effectiveness of patient care within the IBD program.
  • Assessing and treating new and return patients, under the supervision of a physician.
  • Acting as primary communicator for patient questions and phone calls; and assisting with prior authorizations and refills.
  • Providing comprehensive patient education for patients with new diagnoses as well as those starting new treatments.
  • Triaging of new referral cases and second opinions to IBD Center; reviewing of outside medical records; communicating with referring physicians and new patient families as needed to facilitate referral.
  • Identifying patient educational needs and lead/coordinate the development of educational materials.
  • Planning, organizing and overseeing policies and procedures designed to improve the patient/family experience.
  • Serving as member of the IBD Quality Improvement team.

To qualify, you must have...
  • Graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Massachusetts NP or PA license.
  • Background working in children with chronic illness, knowledge of long term medications and drug interactions.
  • Strong physical assessment and diagnostic skills as well as patient education, and coordination of care skills.
  • Ability to travel to outreach locations, as the NP will see patients at Longwood campus as well as our satellite locations
  • Prior experience with pediatric gastroenterology patients and/or clinical research preferred.

The mission of the multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center is to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with Inflammatory Bowel Disease from around the world.
