Minimum Qualifications
The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is seeking an experienced professional to provide leadership and program oversight to the Employment Services team of Family Services workers responsible for an array of Employment services such as Virginia's Initiative for Education and Work (VIEW), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education and Training (SNAP-ET) and First Choice Employment Center to assist citizens in becoming self-sufficient. We are searching for the ideal candidate who will lead the team using a strengths-based and solution-focused approach in all aspects of leadership and program oversight.
The Family Services Supervisor I works to coach and train staff to achieve performance excellence; manages change and facilitates adjustments necessary for the team to embrace changes in practice and program policies and procedures. The supervisor assigns, reviews and evaluates staff's work and plans and develops policies and processes that ensure efficient work-flow and ongoing program development.
The Family Services Supervisor I reviews and evaluates service effectiveness using data and various program evaluation methods. This includes interpreting policies and programs to other agencies and the public, developing collaborative relationships and resources in the community and applying knowledge of Virginia VIEW Employment Services Program procedures.
The Family Services Supervisor I assists in budget preparation, monitors program expenditures, maintains records, prepares reports and performs other work as required.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or bachelor's degree in any field with relevant experience; and a minimum of one year of appropriate and related experience in public social services in the Commonwealth of Virginia; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Three years of experience in adult programs, including experience as a supervisor or lead worker desired; Master's degree preferred.
  • Program specific experience in Virginia public social services preferred.
  • Experience compiling reports, correspondence, narrative of case management and grant proposals preferred.
Skills and Traits:
  • Excellent organizational, time management, oral/written communication, interpersonal, public relations and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply social work principles and Virginia policies in VIEW Employment Services, TANF, SNAP-ET and other applicable programs.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Computer competency required.
  • Ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations related to human services.
  • Excellent organizational, oral/written communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills required.
  • Must be willing to work outside normal working hours as required
Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline.
This position manages an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required
