RESEARCH LEADER in DEPRESSION & ANXIETY at MCLEAN HOSPITAL and PROFESSOR OF PSYCHIATRY at HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL

McLean Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, is a comprehensive psychiatric hospital committed to providing easy access to the highest quality, cost-effective mental health services in the Boston area, Massachusetts and beyond. Since 1811, McLean Hospital has been a world leader in the treatment of mental illness and chemical dependency, research into the cause of mental illness, and the training of generations of mental health care providers. McLean's multidisciplinary programs treat a broad range of psychiatric illnesses across the full continuum of care.

McLean Hospital invites applications from qualified individuals for a position as a Research Leader in the areas of Depression, Stress, and Anxiety within the Division of Depression & Anxiety. The applicant will also serve as a leader of the Center for Depression, Anxiety and Stress Research (CDASR) at McLean Hospital. This recruitment is vital to replace a departing incumbent in this key leadership role and the position is supported in part by an endowed fund at McLean Hospital. Individuals holding an MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent, who would be eligible for a professorial faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School at the level of full professor, with a national/international reputation in research in Depression, Anxiety, and related areas, are encouraged to apply.

This position will report to the Chief Scientific Officer and will work closely with the President and Psychiatrist in Chief of McLean Hospital. This individual will have far-reaching leadership responsibilities, and must have the administrative, research organization, mentoring, fundraising, and communication acumen to lead research programs in clinical neuroscience and neuroimaging at McLean Hospital. They should also be able to engage with institutional, departmental, and divisional leaders, the pan-Harvard community, and the regional, national, and international communities in the field.

The Division of Depression & Anxiety conducts both clinical and basic science research into the relationship between stress, trauma, and the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders. Because these disorders occur in all demographics and often appear in conjunction with other psychiatric diagnoses, the division works collaboratively with McLean’s six other divisions to speed the translation of science from bench to bedside to develop ever-better clinical and medication treatments. The division incorporates all levels of care, from outpatient to residential to multiple specialty inpatient programs and outpatient services like ECT, TMS, and ketamine. CDASR embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to improve our understanding of the psychological, environmental, and neurobiological factors associated with affective disorders. Depression, anxiety, and related disorders are major public health problems. Until recently, our understanding of the mechanisms implicated in depression and anxiety was limited. However, breakthroughs in genetics, neuroscience, and cognitive science have provided us with unprecedented access to the architecture of the human mind with new insights that are revolutionizing our understanding of depression and anxiety.

Salary and recruitment package will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in accordance with institutional guidelines. This position will incorporate an HMS faculty appointment commensurate with qualifications meeting academic appointment criteria at the level of Professor of Psychiatry. Women and minorities underrepresented in medicine are encouraged to apply. Extramural research funding is preferred.

Applicants should submit a cover letter (addressed to Kerry J. Ressler, MD PhD, Search Committee Chair, McLean Hospital, 115 Mill Street, Belmont, MA 02478), a curriculum vitae, a summary of your career priorities, approach to mentorship, and vision for leading the Center for Depression, Anxiety and Stress Research at McLean along with the names and addresses/contact information of three references by email to .

All McLean team members are expected to consistently demonstrate our values of integrity, compassion, respect, diversity, teamwork, excellence, and innovation in their work activities and interactions. McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
