Job Requirements / Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in accounting or finance with 5 or more years in health care financial management including revenue cycle management knowledge and experience
  • Strategic financial leadership experience
  • Supervisory and/or management experience
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations and in a large or complex organization
  • Relational leading style with excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in accounting, finance or business administration
  • Certified Public Accountant (active or inactive)
  • Knowledge of federal policies related to Medical Assistance and Medicare as well as healthcare financial trends
  • Expert knowledge of software with financial reporting capabilities.
  • Leadership experience at an outpatient and/or primary clinic setting with a depth of services
  • Capacity to work in a highly matrixed work environment, ability to cope with complexity and ambiguity and creatively solve problems.

General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and its unit Boynton Health seek a motivated, strategic Senior Finance Director who has a passion for student health and higher education. Boynton Health is the nation’s second largest student health center, providing over 100,000 visits annually. The health center provides a wide range of services including primary care, mental health services, dental care and public health services to University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus to support their health and wellbeing.

The Senior Finance Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the financial and billing systems as well as the student health insurance programs that support the mission of advancing the health and wellbeing of students and the University campus community. The Senior Finance Director will be responsible for leading strategic financial initiatives to advance Boynton’s long-term objectives. This position assures a financial environment that complies with internal and external requirements, provides timely and accurate financial reporting, and exercises good judgment with an ethical approach to business and compliance issues. The Senior Finance Director represents Boynton’s fiscal accountability within the University’s Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and to external funders and other University stakeholders as needed.

Salary: $140,000.00 - $145,000.00/annually

Detailed Job Responsibilities:

Financial Leadership (45%):

  • Responsible and accountable for leading financial initiatives and strategies to support the fiscal viability of Boynton Health.
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner that exemplifies a growth mindset and strong leadership skills.
  • Collaborates closely with the Executive Leadership Team to develop and identify revenue opportunities to improve operating budget and future fiscal planning.
  • Serves as financial liaison to the Office of Student Affairs and as the Senior Financial Director for clinical financial compliance purposes with federal, state and third party payers.
  • Provides regular and timely fiscal updates to the Executive Director, the Executive Leadership Team, OSA Finance Director, and other University leaders as appropriate.
  • Identifies and implements tactics to generate revenue and manage expenses.
  • Leads the fiscal year budgeting process following University accounting guidelines.
  • Implements annual fee master changes to increase revenue from payers.
  • Responsible for negotiating third party contracts to improve overall reimbursement.
  • Provides financial or integrated clinical/financial analysis for planning, contracting and other functions.
  • Provides strategy to guide strategic decision making around the business model.
  • Responsible for leading changes in the practice management systems and for leveraging technological solutions to improve operational excellence.

Financial Data Reporting (25%):

  • Develops and oversees streamlined financial reporting and metrics to monitor financial performance, including revenue realization (patient and grant), cost of service per charge ratios, accounts receivable and expense reductions.
  • Completes monthly financial statements in accordance with financial reporting guidelines that are prepared on an accrual basis and then reconciled quarterly to the University’s Electronic Financial System.
  • Reports measures to Boynton’s Executive Leadership and OSA Finance leadership.
  • Assures that monthly productivity reports and identified financial indicators are provided to service line directors to maximize revenue across service lines as well as address variances to budget.
  • Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of financial information on behalf of the organization, the development of grant budgets and progress reports.

Administrative and Programmatic Operations (30%):

  • Supervises the functions of revenue cycle, finance and accounting for Boynton and ensures the organization maintains compliance with University policy and procedure requirements.
  • Directly supervises the Revenue Cycle Manager, Senior Accountant Manager, Financial Analyst, the Director of Student Health Insurance and other contracted staff to complete needed duties.
  • Directs staff in problem-solving operational issues, assists in developing efficient and timely administrative systems, and provides leadership on established organizational committees including the Revenue Cycle Steering Committee and the Executive Committee.
  • Works closely with supervisees to identify and report on key financial indicators to track overall financial performance.
  • Assures that areas of financial risk are audited and appropriate controls are in place.
  • Serves as the primary contact with the University Internal Sales Department, Purchasing Department, University Office of Human Resources, Auditor’s Office, the Student Health Advisory Committee and the Controller’s Office as well as with UMF and Sponsored Financial Reporting for gifts, endowments and sponsored grants.
  • Leads negotiations with the health plans and other payers or major vendors, and problem-solves contract concerns related to external agreements as they pertain to reimbursement.
