PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
**This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future CDL Bus Drivers. Hourly Rate: $22.00 Hourly
This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
The City of Aurora is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Van/Bus driver to perform transportations service for Adults in our day trip program to various locations in the city of Aurora, Metro Denver and State of Colorado.
This is a temporary, part-time position with no benefits. Hours vary from 10-35 hours per week, Sunday-Saturday.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates 24 passenger bus
  • Transports Aurora program participants to various locations within and sometimes outside the Metropolitan area including the mountains
  • Acts as escort to excursion program participants
  • Monitors participant for compliance with rules and regulations
  • Monitors behavior of participants while in transport
  • Purchases tickets, meals and pays for other excursion-related expenses with a City purchasing card or city funds as designated.
  • Assists passengers when boarding or disembarking from vehicles
  • Assists with packages, supplies or other items as appropriate
  • Operates wheelchair lift, wheelchair securement system and assists wheelchair passengers in entering and exiting vehicle
  • Completes reports before and after each excursion
  • Trouble-shoots minor problems on excursions
  • Maintains the vehicles in a safe manner
  • Cleans interior and exterior of vehicles as need and sanitizes often per Covid Protocol
  • Responds to emergency first aid when required
  • Attends staff meeting, defensive driving courses and other training as assigned
  • Informs Fleet Maintenance of safety related maintenance needed or suspected
  • Performs pre and post-operative vehicle checks and maintenance
  • Completes accident/incident reports as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
  • At least 1-year experience in operation of 20+ passenger van/bus
  • At least 1-year experience in working with Adults and Seniors
Knowledge:
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving principles and needs of participants.
Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and organization skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Skilled in use of computers with related software
Abilities:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Direct and effectively supervise a diverse workforce
  • Read maps, signs and locate addresses quickly
  • Operate a 24-passenger bus on city streets and occasional mountain roads
  • Perform the tasks assigned in a patient and courteous manner
  • Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Valid Driver License
  • Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B Certification with P2 Passenger endorsement Required
  • Current CDL Medical Certification
  • Air Brake Certifications (preferred but not required)
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification (preferred)
This position offers excursions from 4 hours per shift to possible 11 hours per shift depending on the destination.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
  • Light physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds
  • Some walking and standing to assist passengers
  • Some pushing, pulling flexing, climbing, bending, kneeling and crouching to operate wheelchair lift and secure wheelchairs with tie downs
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees, participants and venue personnel
  • Foot/eye coordination to operated van/bus
  • Clear vision to read instructions, traffic markings and vehicle gauges
Work Environment:
  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with some exposure to dust and noise
Equipment Used:
  • Operates a bus/van
  • This position will require the incumbent to use personal cell phone in the course of their employment
