JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Principal Capacity Planning Engineer for Mainframe works directly with a team responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting mainframe processing capacity.

The successful candidate will collect system resource data along with business volume data for analysis using sound data science principles.

The Principal Capacity Planning Engineer is skilled in the types of data used in Capacity Planning, as well as the sources and tools used to collect, validate, and process required data.

A solid background in both descriptive and inferential statistics is imperative to extrapolate insight from large quantities of raw data using SAS software on the mainframe and in distributed environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monthly Mainframe Capacity Report including:
  2. Measurement of system resources usage for all LPARs
  3. Usage Trends, Top-N lists, Peak Profiles, Threshold Exception, etc.
  4. Prepare and present Monthly Mainframe Capacity Planning Review meeting documents.
  5. Annual Mainframe Capacity Report
  6. Resource usage by Application System ID
  7. Collection and reporting of business volume data from multifaceted sources
  8. Resource Forecasting and monthly review of forecasts to actuals
  9. Risk assessments of market conditions for selected business streams
  10. Consultations with Capacity Stress Test team (includes reviews of their reporting)
  11. Produce/update a Business Process Requirements document for selected business stream.
  12. Correlation Analysis, Business volume to System Resources
  13. Pattern Recognition / Detection of outliers
  14. Linear / Logistic Regression, ARIMA forecasts, integrating projections with forecast data.
  15. Quarterly report generation for the IT Governance Committee
  16. Produce documentation, test results as requested by the Model Validation Committee
  17. Policy procedure documentation with supporting evidence for regulatory, audit bodies
  18. Ensure the successful daily processing/reporting of 30 different MICS units split by LPAR and work type.
  19. Examples: SMF/RMF component, CICS, DB2, MQ, mainframe web logs
  20. Apply MICS maintenance to support new processors, z/OS operating systems, and general updates.
  21. Resolve CPU and Storage usage by application system ID.
  22. Monthly delivery of daily data for chargeback processing and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of 8 years of related experience
  2. Bachelor's degree in mathematics/statistics subject area preferred or equivalent experience.
  3. Expertise in mainframe technology and components (CECs, LPARs, JCL, automated scheduling software)
  4. Expertise in analysis of mainframe capacity/performance data (SMF, RMF, CICS, DB2, MQ)
  5. Excellent analytical skills including data exploration, analysis, and production of models.
  6. MICS experience required.
  7. SAS experience required.
  8. HTML, JSON experience is highly desirable.
  9. Strong MS Office skills, particularly sophisticated PowerPoint and Excel skills.
