Business Director - Climate Strategy

Managing the growing impacts of climate change is a critical issue for Capital One, the banking industry, the economy, the communities we serve, and the world. We are embedding climate-related considerations throughout our strategy and risk management, and we are supplying solutions that our customers and communities will need to thrive in an economy aligned with the goals of the 2015 Paris Accords to limit global temperature rise this century.

Our Climate Strategy team is responsible for understanding the shifting climate-related landscape, advising senior leadership on its potential implications for Capital One, building a company-wide climate strategy, organizing and leading company-wide climate strategy efforts, consulting with the emissions measurement and disclosure teams, and contributing to climate risk and broader line of business efforts across the enterprise. The team works on high-importance, high-visibility projects at the most senior levels of the company that have lasting impacts on thousands of associates and millions of customers.

Position summary:

We are seeking a Business Director to join our Climate Strategy team and to lead its Strategic Analysis team. The Business Director will develop the long-term vision for the Strategic Analysis team and lead the team in developing strategies on a variety of climate initiatives. Keys to success in this role include the abilities to draw upon climate and sustainability expertise to distill implications for Capital One, synthesize input from multiple sources, translate broad strategic questions into well-structured discrete pieces of analysis, apply strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to oversee analyses, integrate findings into cohesive and insightful summaries, communicate with internal teams, and prepare and deliver executive-level presentations. This role comes with the unique opportunity to exercise influence and problem-solving skills through interactions with a diverse, senior, and cross-functional group of business partners. In particular, the Director will need to nurture relationships and collaborate with Capital One’s various divisions, including Corporate Strategy, Investor Relations, External Affairs, Legal, Finance, Enterprise Supplier Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Global Workplace Solutions, and Line of Business teams to integrate their perspectives and provide strategic recommendations that reflect their input. This role also comes with the mandate to contribute a central voice in the overall direction of Capital One’s climate and environmental efforts. The Business Director will work in a close and collegial team environment with expertise in climate, strategy, and program and project management.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading a team in supporting the development of climate-related strategic and analytical materials for senior management and the board of directors.
  • Providing recurring and ad hoc insights and analytics on climate-related topics to support various business lines and internal partners, including analyzing and benchmarking Capital One’s performance vs. industry competitors on climate-related topics and monitoring global events to inform senior leadership how they impact Capital One’s climate strategy.
  • Providing strategic leadership that is backed up by strong data and quantitative analytics.
  • Providing an independent challenge to leadership and senior partners on climate-related issues.
  • Managing and leading a team of business analysts.
  • Coaching and mentoring associates with a goal of developing and retaining talent at Capital One.
  • Managing a set of analytical tools and data sources.
  • Partnering with a diverse, senior, and cross-functional set of business partners across the company as they develop and execute localized climate strategies, ensuring consistency with corporate strategy.
  • Helping define and maintain a consistent narrative about our climate efforts.
  • Engaging with third-party organizations, climate advocacy groups, and industry groups.
  • Analyzing complex climate data sets and disclosures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • At least 7 years of experience in analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, Masters or other advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • 3+ years of experience in climate-related work, for example within management consulting, institutional investing, or “in-house” with a corporation.
  • 2+ years of experience in managing teams of analysts.
  • Experience advising organizations on transformational change.
  • Strong organizational skills with impeccable attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical aptitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take and incorporate feedback.
  • Track record of prioritizing and managing a significant volume of projects on a broad array of topics with multiple and simultaneous deadlines.
  • History of building effective collegial relationships with partners at all organizational levels.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed-upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $233,100 - $266,000 for Business Director.

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long-term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
