Statistical Research Programmers work in a multidisciplinary environment in support of research on a wide range of issues spanning health care, education and labor, social and economic wellbeing, national security, and military manpower. They work closely with research staff in creating, managing, and analyzing large and complex data sets. Statistical Research Programmers are expected to acquire a basic understanding of the research topic and a thorough knowledge of the data involved while applying programming and analytic skills.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to program using SAS or R for data management and statistical analysis
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities with a solid understanding of statistical methods
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to produce careful and detail-oriented work
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with longitudinal surveys preferred
  • Experience working in research settings strongly preferred

Education

BA/BS in statistics, biostatistics, or related quantitative field required. MA/MS in statistics, biostatistics, or related quantitative field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum three years of experience in statistical programming with SAS or R, preference for candidates with experience in both.
  • Minimum one year of experience working with health-care claims data from Medicare, Medicaid, or private-sector health-care claims such as Marketscan data.

Coding Sample Required

Applicants will be required to provide code sample(s) related to their work uploaded as a writing sample.

Security Clearance

U.S. Citizenship may be necessary for positions requiring a U.S. government security clearance.

Salary Range

Level II: $82,100 - $122,100
Level III: $95,100 - $144,800
Level IV: $113,700 - $173,600

Successful candidates will be offered employment in a specific title, as determined by the candidate's education and experience. The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatic pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken).
