Pay Information
- Pay Level: 019
- FLSA Category: Exempt – Salaried
- Individual pay will be based on skills, experience, qualifications, location, internal equity, and other relevant factors.

The Group Underwriter is responsible for developing insurance rates for small to medium sized fully insured and self-funded groups and conducting enrollment studies and other statistical studies under supervision. This role assists in pricing and analyzing issues related to state and federal regulation.
Your responsibilities will include
- Develops fully insured and self-funded rates for standard small to medium sized prospective and renewal groups. Assists senior underwriting staff in developing premium rates for larger, more complex existing and prospective groups.
- Calculates demographics, analyzes past claims experience, combines demographics and claims to develop a rate, compares rates to existing rates of group, presents rates to management for approval and notifies appropriate parties of approved rates.
- Develops rates for new benefits by pricing potential variations to standard benefit plans using grids to analyze new benefits, developing rates with new benefits and evaluating reasonableness, present findings to management.
- Updates internal systems to reflect appropriate client rates for selected benefit(s) and validates the outputs.
- Assists in evaluating and formulating underwriting guidelines and methodologies, including, but not limited to reading and interpreting regulations related to sales and underwriting; assists in maintaining underwriting models, including developing enhancements as necessary.
- Assists on projects including analyzing projects, obtaining data, evaluating process and drawing conclusions for modification.
- This role performs technical tasks including systems development, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance or a related field.
- At least 1 year of experience in insurance, accounting, finance or healthcare is preferred.
- Pays close attention to the details of all work and strives for a high level of accuracy.
- Consistently maintains a high level of productivity and manages time effectively.
- Ability to resolve problems, make suggestions and implement process improvements.
- Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
