About the Role
This critical role within the Academic Services team drives the achievement of strategic and operational objectives across teaching, research, and engagement activities. As a senior leader, you will mentor and develop a high-performing team, delivering effective operational and administrative support while managing departmental planning and resources in alignment with strategic priorities. Your understanding of departmental objectives and operational cycles will empower you to navigate complex challenges and optimise performance through strong stakeholder relationships. You will play a pivotal role in transforming strategies into actionable initiatives, ensuring the successful delivery of department and faculty-wide projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the implementation of the Department’s strategic and operational plans across teaching, research, engagement, financial, workforce, and space requirements, while monitoring progress, evaluating outcomes, and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Overseeing the delivery of all Department-led services to enable high-quality teaching, research, and engagement activities, while working collaboratively across the Faculty and broader University to improve end-to-end systems and services.
  • Advising the Head of Department on the impact and implications of changes to policies, procedures, and services, as well as planning and resource matters, while acting as a source of information, guidance, and advice for both academic and professional staff on these topics.
  • Leading and developing professional staff to ensure outstanding operational performance while supporting and nurturing their growth through collaboration in communities of practice across the Faculty and the University.
  • Contributing to all facets of the Department’s service management, developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and acting as a key liaison for information exchange between the Department and Faculty teams.

Who We Are Looking For
You operate with a flexible, problem-solving approach and sound judgment. You are capable of juggling daily operations with longer-term strategic goals, possessing determination, adaptability, and a high degree of self-motivation. Comfortable working independently and with minimal supervision, you can navigate ambiguity effectively. Your ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex information is teamed with a results-oriented mindset and a creative approach to problem-solving. Excellent interpersonal skills enable you to build strong relationships with team members and stakeholders, while your tact and patience ensure confidentiality is maintained. You have a proven track record of managing teams within large organisations and can motivate and influence others effectively, leading staff to achieve results that align with the department’s vision and objectives.

You also have:

  • A Postgraduate degree or a comparable blend of significant relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Proven experience in planning and managing operational delivery within a large, complex, and service-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in resource management, with a focus on financial and workforce planning to meet strategic and operational objectives. This encompasses skills in budget development, financial management, and cost control to fulfil both operational and strategic aims.
  • Exceptional ability to exercise judgement, discretion, and initiative, while leveraging complex qualitative and quantitative data sources to inform operational decision-making and provide strategic advice.
