Job Summary
This position works as a Fabricator/Mechanic in the campus Research Machine Services shop producing custom parts for campus customers to further instructional and research projects. This position will estimate and produce custom parts using machine tools and welding equipment.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Provide cost estimates to produce custom parts, modify existing customer supplied parts, or assemble customer supplied parts to meet customer specifications.
  • Coordinate with customers to ensure all relevant information is provided.
  • Produce, modify and/or assemble parts customers have provided per drawings provided during the estimate process.
  • Work with customer to address unforeseen issues.
  • Provide on-site services as required.
  • Work with exotic materials and/or strict tolerance specifications to meet industry regulatory requirements as needed for end use of parts.
  • Provide handling and cutting services to support material management and material sales.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment located in the Research Machining Services welding area.
  • Maintain all required University training is operating RMS equipment.
  • Work with supervisor to develop roadmaps to improve shop equipment and capabilities.
  • Work with Supervisor to improve streamline administrative procedures and overhead in RMS operations.
  • Document and maintain all appropriate safety certifications and maintain Safety information for RMS welding/fabrication shop area.
  • Work with RMS machinist to ensure the RMS shop area is a safe work area for all users.

What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience
Qualified candidates will need:
  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum five (5) years working in a fabrication shop
Skills needed:
  • GMAW, SNAW, GTAW, Oxy fuel welding, plasma arc cutting, soldering on numerous base metals
  • Fabrication skills
  • Experience working with and welding stainless steel and other exotic materials used in the aerospace environment
  • CAD software fundamentals using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar software
  • Cost/time estimation skills for producing various parts
  • HEAVY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently, and up to 100+ lbs
  • Position does require outdoor work in freezing temperatures, or extreme heat (above 90 degrees)
Nice to have:
  • Associates Degree
  • Expertise in numerous welding processes.
  • Current ASME/AWS certified welder for pipe/pressure vessels
