About the Role
Uber Next Gen Fleet Engineering team provides TCO optimized, high quality and reliable hardware and cloud infrastructure solutions to support the technology stack that supports Ubers diverse applications across Mobility, Delivery and Freight.
Performance is a key metric used to derive TCO optimized hardware for platforms such as compute, storage, data and machine learning. This role will involve ensuring that we are meeting or exceeding our target performance metrics across these platforms and the applications that ride on them, with a focus on storage, by owning every aspect of performance including benchmarking, system tuning, application debugging, and optimization.
What you’ll do
You will leverage your expertise in systems infrastructure, hardware, and cloud technologies to assess and evaluate storage technologies, ensuring alignment with our cloud roadmap and stakeholder needs. Your role will involve:
- Strategic Assessment and Planning: Analyze and assess new storage technologies to determine their fit within our cloud infrastructure strategy, aligning solutions with the needs and expectations of our stakeholders.
- Design and Architecture: Contribute to the strategic planning, design, and architecture of storage systems, ensuring they support production reliability, performance optimization, cost efficiency, and cloud expansion efforts.
- Benchmarking and Qualification: Oversee the qualification and benchmarking pipelines for new storage solutions, continuously improving the efficiency, accuracy, and usability of related tools and workflows.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams and suppliers to plan, troubleshoot, and resolve issues during the introduction of new storage products and throughout the sustaining qualification processes.
- Innovation and Improvement: Bring your experience and insights to drive strategic initiatives around tooling and automation, enhancing the reliability and scalability of our storage infrastructure.
- Immediate Impact: Contribute immediately with your ideas and hands-on engineering skills, making a tangible impact on the quality and performance of our infrastructure.
- We value the input of all our teammates and expect you to actively participate and share your expertise to improve our systems and processes. This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the evolution of our storage infrastructure.
Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years of relevant hardware engineering experience, with a focus on storage technologies (SSD, NVME, HDD, block storage, etc), and cloud equivalents and products.
- BS degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong understanding of server hardware and related software dependencies (BIOS, firmware, etc.).
- Automate everything bias: You should have an instinct and intuition to automate whatever you can and improve the efficiency of our processes.
- Collaboration bias: you should have an inherent drive to collaborate, both within the team and across orgs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to write detailed design documents, ERDs, position papers.
- A belief that your team can accomplish more together than as separate individuals.
- Attention to detail, particularly around testing and benchmarking methodologies, and quality.
- Strong sense of ownership, passion, and initiative to fix problems and optimize systems that are both inside and outside your area of responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with migration from on prem to cloud is a plus.
- Experience in hardware health and performance monitoring, benchmarking and qualification solutions - design and operation.
- Solid understanding of server hardware at scale: network fundamentals, OS imaging, provisioning, distribution, and configuration deployment at a large scale.
- Strong understanding of Linux & kernel internals, e.g., ability to read and understand kernel code.
