Chief Medical Officer, Duke Regional Hospital (DRH)

The Chief Medical Officer for Duke Regional Hospital (CMO) is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and the primary clinical voice for the hospital. The CMO is responsible for clinical excellence, helping set the quality agenda, and managing the relationships among the various physician activities of DRH, a 388-bed community teaching hospital within Duke University Health System (DUHS). The CMO provides leadership in the alignment of all providers and physician services with the hospital's strategic plans and clinical program priorities. Approximately 1200 physicians and advanced practice providers are credentialed at DRH. The CMO leads the development of the hospital's quality agenda, including working with DUHS leadership to define consistent performance targets and metrics, setting a standard of care, measuring and improving clinical outcomes, and disseminating best practices. The CMO provides senior executive leadership for the hospital in facilitating medical staff interactions with hospital administration and the governing board to assure effective and efficient delivery of quality medical care consistent with the mission and vision of DRH and DUHS. The CMO will also work closely with the clinical leadership teams at Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center and Arringdon Ambulatory Surgical Center, two ambulatory surgical centers affiliated with DRH.

DRH seeks a physician leader with successful experience in guiding multi-disciplinary clinical program activities. A leader with understanding and appreciation of the unique role of a community hospital and community medical staff within a broader academic health system.

Specific duties and responsibilities of this position include - but are not limited to - the following:

1) Oversees the medical affairs of Duke Regional Hospital (DRH) and serves as the primary physician liaison among hospital administration, the medical staff, and Duke University Health System (DUHS).

2) Works closely with the DUHS CMO and hospital and health system leadership to develop metrics and s tandards for DRH physicians (outpatient as well as inpatient), and with their participation, set goals to optimize performance.

3) In collaboration with the DUHS Quality and Safety leadership, develops quality metrics and leads hospital quality initiatives and policies.

4) Responsible for medical directors and medical coverage services for the hospital.

5) Directly oversees clinical and operational departments, including but not limited to: Medical Staff Services, Pharmacy, Nutrition Services, Advanced Practice, Emergency Medicine, Diabetes Management, and Infection Prevention. Provides matrixed oversight for Hospital Medicine, Case Management, Performance Excellence, Palliative Care, and UME and GME initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities:

Assures a clinical environment in which a physician's practice is supportive of Duke Regional Hospital's mission, vision, and values and aligned with the DUHS mission, vision, and values.

Works in partnership with ambulatory surgical center leaders to create efficient, high quality platforms for ambulatory surgery.

Defines and aligns physician provider networks throughout DUHS in support of the DUHS strategic plan

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable national, state and local laws and regulations, TJC, NCQA and other regulatory requirements affecting the medical and allied health staff.

Ensures appointment of medical staff and allied health privileges are compliant with sound credentialing practices.

Assures the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of medical staff services.

Provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, strategy execution and implementation of care management programs.

Oversees, directs and supports the rendering of medical management decisions that maximize benefits for patients and their loved ones while pursuing and supporting corporate objectives.

Monitors effectiveness of management practices and productivity indicators using data such as turnover rates, absenteeism, budget variance, patient, physician, and staff satisfaction surveys.

Serves as liaison with external parties and institutions, including public, governmental, and other DUHS entities.

Participates in professional organizations and represents the hospital in a professional, competent manner in the community.

Creates a physician leadership plan to identify, develop, and mentor future physician leaders across the enterprise (CMOs, medical directors, etc.)

Demonstrates effective leadership skills of delegation, organization, and coordination of the intra- department activities and inter-department integration.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

MD with unrestricted medical license required.

Experience

Minimum of seven or more years of clinical practice, participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities, and through management experience within a health care delivery system. Three to five years of management.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Board certification in medical management preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

MD or DO with (or eligible for) unrestricted medical license in North Carolina. Additional advanced management degree (MBA, MHA) preferred.

The role requires approximately 10% time in patient care activities. Specific activities to be determined based on clinical specialty, candidate interest, etc.

Experience:

Minimum of five or more years of clinical practice, participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities, and thorough management experience within a health care delivery system with three to five years of management experience. Candidates with experience working in an academic setting are especially encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A demonstrated track record of improving quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency

A strong understanding of the regulatory, accreditation, and credentialing standards and requirements for community hospitals

A proven ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, administrators, and other stakeholders across the continuum of care
