The Role
Moderna is seeking a Senior Software Developer (SDE) / Machine Learning Engineer (MDE) to join the ML Platform Team in Seattle. The MLE will play a crucial role in developing tools and infrastructure to support data scientists' experimentation and the productionalization of models/algorithms. As a Sr. SDE, this role requires strong collaboration skills to work closely with data science teams and application teams to develop real-world applications. We are looking for someone who is deeply curious, exhibits an excellent work ethic, and has a desire to bring novel mRNA therapeutics and vaccines to the market that will improve the lives of patients worldwide.


Here’s What You’ll Do

  1. Lead the design and development of software systems for machine learning solutions, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and robustness.
  2. Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  3. Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code in a variety of programming languages.
  4. Architect and implement end-to-end machine learning pipelines, following best practices for data ingestion, preprocessing, re-training, evaluation, deployment, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  5. Optimize existing machine learning systems for performance and scalability.
  6. Develop and maintain high-performance APIs and microservices to support AI applications.
  7. Implement best practices for software development, including code reviews, testing, and documentation.
  8. Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  9. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, and integrate new technologies and methodologies into our systems.
  10. Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations throughout the development lifecycle.
  11. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring the reliability and performance of deployed systems.
  12. Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  1. Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  2. Extensive experience (5+ years) in software engineering, with a focus on AI and machine learning.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of and prior experience with ML workflows.
  4. Experience building tools to deploy ML models to the cloud using CI/CD.
  5. Proven track record of designing and deploying large-scale machine learning systems in production environments.
  6. Deep understanding of deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, PyTorch Lightning, JAX) and libraries (e.g., CUDA).
  7. Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  1. 8+ years of experience delivering software projects, preferably in an industry setting.
  2. Outstanding communication skills (verbal, written, and virtual/remote).
  3. Success in communicating effectively at multiple levels of stakeholdership.
  4. Demonstrated experience building machine learning workflows and executing complex and interdisciplinary software projects.
  5. Fluency in Python, especially machine learning (Sklearn/PyTorch).
  6. Experience with fine-tuning and deploying LLM technologies (e.g., Llama) on cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS Bedrock).
  7. Familiarity with best practices in software development including coding standards, code reviews, version control (Git), build process, software testing, operations, and documentation.
  8. Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (like ECR, ECS, EC2, etc).
  9. Experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems.
  10. Working knowledge of Unix operating systems.
  11. Working knowledge of distributed systems/applications.
  12. Working knowledge of databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).
  13. Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
  14. Experience in agile/scrum or related collaborative workflow.
