Job Summary

The Senior Manager Income Taxes invests in the future of Southwest through their management of the Income and Excise Taxes Team that handles Southwest's federal, state, and local income taxes. This role is the People Leader responsible for the quarterly and annual tax provision, and the federal and state tax returns. This individual works closely with Corporate Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, and Investor Relations to obtain an understanding of business events and transactions, and to provide tax deliverables. The Senior Manager Income Taxes is a proactive problem-solver with proven project management capabilities, who is ready to help drive the future of Southwest.

Responsibilities
  • Act as advisor to other departments or individuals who are seeking information and guidance relating to income tax
  • Lead both the tax compliance and income tax accounting teams to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of federal and state income tax returns, quarterly estimates, related tax payments; manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes; and coordinate with internal and external auditors
  • Research, analyze and solve complex issues, including forecasting consequences of tax planning strategies, corporate M&A transactions, pending legislation and new business initiatives
  • Collaborate with the Financial Accounting & Reporting Department to understand tax impacts of new or nonrecurring transactions, GAAP accounting policy or method changes, etc.
  • Advise the Financial Planning & Analysis and Investor Relations Departments as to the forecasted effective tax rate for GAAP and NonGAAP purposes and updates throughout the year, as necessary
  • Advise and update the Treasury Department on quarterly and annual tax cash flow expectations
  • Ensure that U.S. current and deferred tax account balances are accurately stated and properly classified through annual reconciliation to underlying asset and liability accounts and/or discrete tax bases
  • Ensure full compliance with U.S. GAAP tax disclosures by managing the preparation of the tax data required for the tax footnote included in SEC Form 10-K annual report and Form 10-Q quarterly reports
  • Monitor tax law and/or accounting pronouncement changes that impact the Company and proactively communicate to Tax Leadership
  • Proactively identify new ways to create value through business process improvements and technology enhancements
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of ASC 740 as it pertains to accounting for income taxes, including SEC requirements and disclosures, the requirements of SOX section 404, the US corporate income tax code, Treasury regulations, IRS rulings, and key judicial decisions affecting the industry
  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data
  • Skilled in organization and time management in order to perform multiple, complex, and concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Skilled in written and verbal communication, including business writing
  • Ability to apply multiple coaching strategies in order to tailor feedback to the unique style of individual Team Members
  • Ability to challenge convention purposefully; advocate for new ideas and processes to increase efficiency, quality, and Customer satisfaction
  • Skilled in understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making
  • Skilled in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job
  • Ability to make time sensitive decisions to move work forward; take responsible risks to achieve goals
  • Ability to act with courage and consistency when demonstrating Southwest values, even when it might be unpopular or inconvenient to do so
Education
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Taxation or Finance
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading team(s)
  • Fully functioning, broad knowledge in:
    • Corporate Taxation
    • Accounting
    • Business Administration
    • Finance
  • Preferred: Experience with SAP S4 HANA
  • Preferred: Experience in Public Accounting working on corporate tax returns
  • Preferred: Tax fit asset experience
  • Preferred: Experience with Excel and OneSource Tax Provision and OneSource Income Tax
Licensing/Certification
  • Required: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to perform work duties from limited space work station/desk/office area for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information
  • Must have the flexibility to work extended hours, including occasional weekends, and Company holidays
  • Some travel may be required

Pay & Benefits

Competitive market salary from $158,950.00 to $176,600.00 per year* depending on qualifications and experience, with opportunity for future pay increases based on performance and market movement. For eligible leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
