SALARY:
$154,500 to $195,500+ per year, the posted salary range represents the minimum to the midpoint within RVU’s compensation plan. RVU’s full compensation structure provides a minimum to a maximum range. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill, knowledge, experience, education, and credentials.

Primary Purpose:
The (SR.) Director of Simulation in Medicine and Surgery (SIMS) is the principal administrator and leader of the Office of Simulation in Medicine and Surgery (SIMS) on the RVU Colorado and Utah campuses. The Director is responsible for the management of the budget and all resources allocated to the Department. The Director is also responsible for the supervision and professional development of the employees within their reporting structure.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide oversight, direction and guidance for all SIMS personnel to ensure all academic responsibilities and job functions are achieved with the highest level of professionalism to accomplish the RVU mission statement.
- Provide leadership to team with regular feedback, assessments, performance evaluations, and performance improvement actions. The Director is responsible for recruiting, developing, advancing and retaining department personnel aligned with the RVU core values.
- Serves as a member of the required ACS AEI Simulation Oversight Committee. Oversees ACS AEI program accreditation through supervision of the ACE AEI Director.
- Lead the development of simulation courses and training sessions for medical students and a spectrum of other healthcare learners.
- Prepare, develop, and maintain cost-effective annual budgets for both campuses including operational and capital expenditures in adherence to RVU policies and procedures. Track and approve department expenses, Staff and Faculty CME, and other expenses regularly.
- Help build a culture that respects, values, and promotes diversity by recruiting, hiring, and retaining diverse and quality talent within an atmosphere of access, equity, and inclusion.
- Work in partnership with all academic programs to ensure delivery of simulation activities within a cohesive schedule, curriculum plan and execution.
- Keep current in the latest simulation industry advances and participate actively in simulation organizations representing RVU.
- Oversee the maintenance of the equipment in the Simulation Center and assuring adequate supplies for simulation courses and activities.
- Assist in the marketing of the Simulation Center to outside groups, such as other universities and colleges, residency programs, first responder organizations, and other potential community partners.
- Direct the education and instruction of medical students and other health care professional learners in the Simulation Center while providing mentorship and motivation for learning in research and scholarly activity through active learning groups, laboratory experience and research opportunities.
- Participate in simulation delivery and the assessment and evaluation of students, residents and other health care professionals in the Simulation Center by providing feedback and remedial assistance to ensure that the learners meet the competency standards established by the faculty and college.
- Participate in curriculum development, assessment and modification as a part of RVU’s ongoing quality improvement and assessment program.
- Represent RVU with positivity and integrity in collaborative initiatives with internal and external stakeholders to help accomplish the mission of the University.
- Serve as an active participant on various committees or task forces or other duties as assigned by their supervisor.
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Simulation in Montana.
- All Directors of Simulation are responsible for collaborative efforts on programming, best practices, accreditation, budget, and procurement.
- Assist with SIMS personnel attending Intensive Surgical Skills Week and other perioperative simulations to maximize research opportunities, instruction, and educational collaborations.
- Advance the perceived value and output of research and scholarly activity among the faculty and learners of the Simulation Center through leadership, mentorship and participation.
- Keep current in the latest simulation industry advances and participate actively in the National Simulation Organizations, representing RVU. Explore innovative simulation modalities and integrate them into the university culture to impact the broader organization.
- Guide SIMS Predoctoral Fellowship Advisors in administering the SIMS Predoctoral Fellowship.
- Oversee SIMS Course Directors in execution of Advanced Surgical and Simulation Electives.
- Oversee SIMS Faculty and Staff in the development of simulation courses and training sessions for medical students and a spectrum of other healthcare learners.
- Direct SIMS Faculty and Staff in development of simulation courses and training sessions for Faculty and Staff Development.
- Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and modification as a part of the university’s ongoing quality improvement and assessment program. Attend trainings and represent Department in accreditation cycles, such as HLC, COCA, ARC-PA, etc.
- Provide oversight, direction and guidance for all SIMS personnel to ensure all academic responsibilities and job functions are achieved to accomplish the RVU and academic program mission statements.
- Collaborate with outside groups such as other universities and programs, residencies, hospitals, first responders, and local community affiliates and professional organizations for research and potential alliances.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the delivery of medical education through simulation activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of varied curriculum templates in simulation.
- Track record of leadership on Inclusive Excellence initiatives to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for faculty, staff and students.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Clinical Degree: DO, MD, PA, DNP, EdD from an accredited institution.
- In good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.
- Clinical experience.
- Experience in teaching in a medical school or in graduate medical education in the field of simulation.
- Experience in personnel and budget management.
- Experience in standardized testing and assessment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a faculty member and a course director.
- Experience in pedagogy and accreditation.
- Certified Healthcare Simulator Educator (CHSE) and/or Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS).
- Experience in Educational Research.
