Come join the team responsible for constructing bridges, roads, sidewalks, bus stops, trails, and other transportation and pedestrian projects for the County of Fairfax. The Utilities Design and Construction Division seeks an Engineer III to perform engineering and construction contracting work for the Transportation Construction Branch.

The Utilities Design and Construction Division is responsible for managing the bid advertisement, contract award processes, and overseeing all aspects of construction contract management for transportation projects and stormwater projects including inspection, testing, code compliance, warranty, and project closeout.
Note: This position is in the Transportation Construction Branch, located in Fairfax County Government center at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. This position may be eligible for telework.
Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, three years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must be highly motivated; possess the skills necessary to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment; organized, and detail oriented as it relates to construction management and documentation and with strong communication skills.

  • At least three (3) years of experience preparing, procuring, administering, and managing construction and engineering contracts for site or utility construction.
  • At least three (3) years of experience managing multiple capital projects in design and/or construction
  • Experience with project financial and budgetary planning, tracking, and reporting at the project level.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in VDOT and other regulatory permitting and project closeout.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to hear normally in order to recognize backup alarms of construction equipment. Ability to safely walk across uneven terrain in performing field investigations, measurements, and onsite meetings for construction projects. Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain and typical construction sites. Ability to produce organized and legible handwritten or typed computer-generated documents including the use of graphics, and the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
