About our Opportunity
The City of Asheville is excited to hire an Inventory Specialist within the Public Works Department, Fleet Management Division. The purpose of this position is to act as a working manager to provide technical and supervisory work in storing, inventorying, and distributing materials and supplies for the City's Fleet Management Division. The individual in this position will play a crucial role in keeping the work of the Division on schedule and on budget by owning the management of essential supplies and resources.
What you'll be doing:
  • Performs inventory duties to maintain inventory levels and assists in supervising warehouse inventory activities.
  • Orders, receives, stores and issues parts and supplies for various departments daily.
  • Makes recommendations for routine work and training.
  • Performs weekly cycle counts and spot checks for active inventory items in warehouse or in shop.
  • Operates forklift when needed.
  • Enter stock items into Fleetio software.
  • Download fuel reports daily, add new users and vehicles to fuel system.
  • Helps with fuel ordering in the absence of the Stockroom supervisor.
  • Performs basic bookkeeping duties as necessary.
  • Submits purchase order requisitions for special order parts and/or equipment as needed.
  • Additional Functions: performs other duties as required.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
High school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in fleet management or related field; supplemented by one year of experience in inventory management or related field.
Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required : Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must possess and maintain Forklift certification.

Other things to know:
Work Schedule : This position generally works Monday through Thursday 7am-6pm, but due to the nature of the responsibilities, occasional work outside of these hours will be necessary on an as needed basis. This position is non-exempt and is eligible for overtime in accordance with City Policy.
