Position description

Associate/Full Specialist - Tang Lab, Diabetes Center


The Tang Lab in the Diabetes Center at the University of California, San Francisco, is looking to recruit a Specialist.


Primary Responsibilities:



  • The incumbent will be working with a team of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on human and mouse regulatory T cell engineering to enhance the cells' fitness and function in suppressing pathogenic immune activation.

  • The incumbent will assist with various synthetic immunology projects and specific tasks include molecular cloning, preparing retroviral libraries, preparing retroviral and AAV stock, genomic and epigenomic analyses, RNA and protein expression analyses, genome editing using CRIPSR, and mouse experiments including cell infusion, tissue collection and processing, mouse cell isolation, and human blood sample processing.


Required Qualifications:



  • Appointees to the Associate rank should possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of immunological research experience. Associate Specialists are normally expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.

  • Appointees to the full Specialist rank should possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of immunological research experience. Specialists at full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.

  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the associate or full Specialist rank by the time of hire.

  • Knowledge of and experience with general molecular biology techniques

  • Knowledge of and experience with flow cytometry.

  • Knowledge of and experience with mouse husbandry, handling, treatments, health monitoring, and tissue collection.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with primary human blood samples.

  • Comfortable working with laboratory instruments and computers; Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • The ability to work under minimal supervision after the initial training period is key for this position.

  • Strong organizational skills in time management and maintenance of accurate notebooks and computer files.

  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Willingness to learn and highly motivated to succeed.

  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours to accommodate experimental schedules.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior experiences with molecular and cellular immunology experiments.
