DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Wise Works Director position is a full-time employee/staff member of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for Wise County and the City of Norton, which prosecutes felony and misdemeanor crimes that occur in Wise County, its six municipalities, and the City of Norton. The Office works closely with fifteen different law enforcement agencies, three Virginia Department of Corrections facilities, the 30th Judicial Circuit Multi Jurisdictional Grand Jury, the Southwest Virginia Regional Narcotics Task Force, the Southwest Virginia Joint Senior Abuse Task Force, the Southwest Virginia Children’s Advocacy Center, Mountain Empire Community College, and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Wise Works is an alternative sentencing program focused on community service in lieu of incarceration for first offender, non-violent criminals. Participants gain work experience, education, training, learn about potential treatment options, and receive help with obtaining their driver’s license and paying court costs. Instead of sitting in jail, they become productive members of society through the development of positive work habits and responsibility, saving substantial money for Wise County. The Wise Works Director will oversee the daily implementation of this program and monitor its success.

The applicant must maintain high standards of accuracy and exercise reasonable tact and discretion when performing duties. Due to the 50/50 balance of in-office and out-of-office work, the applicant must be able to organize, multi-task, and work efficiently both as a self-motivated individual and in a team environment.
