The Research Resources Center (RRC) is a division of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). RRC offers research faculty, staff, and students a diverse inventory of high-end scientific equipment as well as a wide range of services offered by 14 core facilities staffed with highly skilled scientists.

Job Summary

This position will be responsible for providing advanced electron microscopy services, supporting research initiatives across various disciplines and contributing to the development and optimization of imaging techniques. This role requires a strong background in electron microscopy, excellent problem-solving skills, and a collaborative approach to working with researchers.

Responsibilities

Electron Microscopy Operations

  1. Operate and maintain scanning electron microscopes (SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM), ensuring high-quality imaging and analysis.
  2. Perform routine and advanced imaging techniques, including SEM, specimen preparation and 3D reconstruction by FIB and TEM.

Research Support

  1. Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students to design and execute electron microscopy experiments.
  2. Provide technical guidance and training on sample preparation, imaging protocols, and data analysis.

Sample Preparation and Analysis

  1. Develop and optimize sample preparation techniques for various types of specimens, including biological, materials, and nanomaterials.
  2. Analyze and interpret imaging data, providing detailed reports and recommendations.

Facility Management

  1. Oversee the operation and maintenance of electron microscopy equipment, including troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
  2. Manage inventory of supplies and ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices.

Training and Education

  1. Conduct workshops and training sessions for researchers and students on electron microscopy techniques and equipment use.
  2. Stay current with advancements in electron microscopy and integrate new techniques into core services.

Collaboration and Research

  1. Collaborate with internal and external researchers to advance electron microscopy applications and methodologies.
  2. Contribute to the preparation of research publications and grant proposals.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field with a focus on electron microscopy. Master's or PhD preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience with TEM and SEM, including expertise in sample preparation, imaging, and analysis.

Proficiency in electron microscopy software for image acquisition and analysis. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

In-depth understanding of electron microscopy principles, sample preparation techniques, and imaging protocols.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment.

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Experience with advanced techniques such as cryo FIB, 3D reconstructions and Python programming is preferred.
