Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist - Emergency Medicine

Job Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine ( at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications from candidates for Project Scientist positions.

The selected candidates will be responsible for:

  1. Surgical procedures to produce animal stroke models in mice and rats for the studies of molecular mechanisms of stroke brain injury and for testing brain protective interventions.
  2. Gene construct preparation.
  3. Confocal and electron microscopic imaging analysis.
  4. Transgenic mouse models, including designing, producing, and characterizing gene constructs, transgenic mouse characterization, etc.
  5. Molecular and biochemical analysis such as gene cloning and expression, Western and Northern blotting, ELISA assays, in situ hybridization, etc.
  6. Research data analysis and publication.
  7. Training, teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and other research staff.

The program is highly interdisciplinary, utilizing animal surgery, cell culture, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and quantitative histological analysis.

Appointments will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Candidates must have a MD or PhD in health related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with 3+ years of experience in the following areas are preferred: animal models of brain ischemia, confocal and electron microscopy, molecular cloning, transgenic animal construct preparation, molecular and biochemical characterization of transgenic gene constructs in cell culture, and therapeutic antibody development.
