SUMMARY
A Crater fabricates wooden crates or boxes and packs signs or other large odd shaped products. Someone with carpentry skills and experience with basic handheld tools would be a great fit for this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Reads blueprints, shipping notices and other specifications to ensure hardware is attached; also inspects product to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used and types of supports and braces to be used.
- Lays out dimensions on materials with ruler, measuring tape and pencil. Saws materials to size. Assembles materials.
- Places product in container. Bolts heavy pieces to bottom of container or skid.
- Wraps and pads product with excelsior, paper or other packing material.
- Builds crate around large or odd shaped articles. Nails cover on crate.
- Wraps and tightens metal bands around crate.
- Attaches identification labels or stencils containing such information as shipping destination, weight and type of product contained on crate.
- Repairs broken crates.
- Counts items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders. Weighs loaded crate.
- Moves container to shipping area, moves lumber, paper and other wrapping supplies to crating area. Sharpens saw blades.
- Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications.
- Calculate basic units of measurement using tape measurer.
- Ability to draw and interpret bar Graphs.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus experience and/or training preferred.
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lift at least 50lbs
- Stand or walk for long periods of time
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an environment that is not climate controlled. The temperature may fluctuate and be hot or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
