Position Summary

The Chair of Dental Hygiene provides leadership in strategic planning, departmental curriculum management, budgeting, department staffing and supervision, faculty development, and overall management of departmental activities. The Chair maintains a strong supportive relationship with other administrators, faculty, staff, and students providing leadership in departmental dental hygiene education, service activities, clinical care, and research. The chair will provide vision and focus to build upon a strong departmental and collegiate team and advance the mission of the department and college.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership directed at meeting the mission and goals of the department and the college in teaching, scholarly activity, professional service, and patient care.
  2. Recruit, hire, and retain faculty and staff consistent with the needs and resources of the COD.
  3. Provide direction and oversight to the Hygiene Faculty and grow the program as resources allow.
  4. Evaluate faculty annually and make recommendations regarding salary, retention, promotion/tenure, and allocations of effort in teaching, research, and service.
  5. Provide departmental faculty and staff mentorship and advising supporting departmental faculty and staff professional development.
  6. Lead the department in preparing outcome measures related to the department and in support of collegiate and institutional effectiveness.
  7. Monitor and guide the department in assessment, review, and continual improvement of departmental courses.
  8. Actively participate in forming COD policy and providing departmental information to COD and UNMC administration in a timely manner.
  9. Review, manage, and be responsible for the department’s annual budgets.
  10. Approve department expenditures and ensure these expenditures follow policies and procedures of the University and COD.
  11. Establish priorities within the department to ensure that funding is used to meet department goals and objectives.
  12. Represent the interests of the department faculty to the administration, the COD, and the profession.
  13. Participate in teaching departmental and collegiate courses.
  14. Participate in scholarly activities in area of expertise.
  15. Foster a culture in the department (and college) that supports scholarly activity by faculty and students.
  16. Participate in departmental, collegiate, and UNMC service activities.
  17. Maintain competency in the areas of specialization.
  18. All Departmental faculty directly report to this position. Select staff positions (departmental administrators and others may report to this position).

Required Qualifications

  1. A Nebraska dental hygiene license or eligibility for a Nebraska license.
  2. Demonstrated excellence and commitment to team-based clinic education and care, including a history of innovation and collaboration.
  3. Superior interpersonal and communication skills and experience in a leadership role in an academic setting, including organizational, administrative, and personnel management skills.
  4. Familiarity with accreditation processes and standards relevant to dental hygiene education.

Supplemental Qualifications

Additional preferred qualifications include: a history of administration and budget experience.
