About the role:
The Vice President of Data Management and Governance reports into the Global Head of Data Management & Governance. The most prominent component of the position is to serve as the Product Owner for the enterprise Master Data Management (MDM) strategy, ecosystem & associated platforms, processes, and overall operating model by defining, directing, implementing, and continuing to enhance the MDM roadmap, business architecture, and end state vision aligning with corporate objectives. With this ownership comes the responsibility for maintaining and servicing a 24/7 operational production system along with the management of business analysts and MDM stewards in support of it. Additionally, this role will be responsible for the management of 3rd party/market data and instituting as well as enforcing, data controls and standards as part of a specifically defined governance framework. The role will also be responsible for mastery, custodianship, and deep level of understanding of additional data domains across the enterprise in support of both underwriting and claims life cycle processes. The ability to navigate across a wide variety of stakeholders, geographies, and business units in underwriting, claims, operations, as well as other functions and downstream consumers is essential.


What you need to know:
MDM Core Responsibilities: Lead and manage the MDM vision and strategy in line with the Global Head of Data Management & Governance’s priorities and objectives. Create a strong and seamless partnership with the MDM IT owner in delivering next horizon MDM objectives. Partner with Data Office Architecture, other Data Management & Governance leaders, as well as business and functional leaders in articulating and implementing the MDM strategy. Execute action plans and strategies for further expansion of MDM usage to drive business use and maintenance of the best version of truth for critical domains. Continue to commercialize the MDM offering and identify new opportunities to persist the usage of master data.


Operating Model: Continuously define and improve the MDM operating model including people, process, and technology across the organization and throughout the entire data lifecycle - ensuring the most effective and efficient outcomes. Identify and achieve correct levels of maturity that align with overarching corporate objectives and end state visions.


Business Ownership of MDM Platform: Assert business ownership of the MDM platform identifying and driving further implementation aspects, organization of, prioritization, and enhancements of platform capabilities and impacted processes. Support the technical owners of the platform from the perspective of prioritizing, planning, implementing, and testing both necessary defect fixes and strategic enhancements, setting up new features, and assisting with upgrades.


Master Data Governance: Ensure the catalog of reference data is current with complete business and technical metadata (e.g. business terms, definitions at table and column level). Support Reference Data Governance activities on Collibra – Catalog, Audit, Capture of Consumer/Stakeholder/methods and semi-annual recertification. Additionally, support evaluation/exploration of alternative capabilities, as/if needed. Support development of Data Governance Program execution health metrics in support of communicating overall program health using quantitative and qualitative data.


Align with Other Data Management Disciplines: Engage with the Data Governance, Data Stewardship, Data Quality, Reference Data Management, Data Architecture, BI and Data Warehousing, Data Science, and other teams to ensure MDM activity aligns as needed with other capability needs including the Global Data Governance Accountability Framework. Ensure collaboration and consistency across these teams and in conversations with similar stakeholders.


Team Management: Manage a team of approximately eight (8) data professionals in multiple locations (currently 5 in New Hampshire, 1 in Texas, 1 in New York, and 1 in New Jersey) providing guidance, advice, direction, expertise, and support on priorities for the MDM center of excellence. The role will facilitate an embedded culture that is dedicated to staff training, re-skilling, development, and opportunity creation.


Standards, Best Practices, and Procedures: Further define, develop and maintain MDM standards, best practices, and procedures. Conduct periodic reviews of MDM to ensure compliance with the data governance standards and policies and identify where updates or new standards and policies are required.


Data Culture and Communication: Partner with our Data Culture and Communications Lead in designing and defining training and communications to ensure an excellent customer experience with our team and our tools. Ensure change management and stakeholder communication on MDM changes as applicable. Educate owners, stewards, and consumers of data on their role in governance and ensure compliance.


What we’re looking for:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant field or proven record of experience in Data Management and Governance roles. MS a plus but not required. Strong understanding of principles, procedures, and skills associated with Data Management and Governance concepts and practices - preferably in a large Property & Casualty Insurance company or other complex Financial Services setting. Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or other comparable certification is desirable. Superb and proven people management skills with no less than 10+ years managing and leading teams in dynamic and high stress environments with tight timelines and competing priorities. Proficiency in administration, design, and development with data management and governance tools. Demonstrated experience with Data Management and Governance Platforms such as Collibra, Informatica Axon/Catalog, IBM Infosphere, Waterline Data, etc. 10 + years in a large corporate environment, preferably a Property and Casualty Insurance company with a deep level of expertise in the underwriting lifecycle process. Team player with a highly motivated, positive, and collaborative attitude. Superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills with a high degree of attention to detail. Strategic thinker with ability to understand and execute the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, with changing priorities and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks to meet tight deadlines. Solid program and project management skills (preferably Agile methodology) with ability to manage diverse projects impacting multiple roles and processes. Ability to influence change and drive results. Must be a self-motivated driver to identify issues and resolve them quickly. Ability to provide vision and direction in management level reporting using aggregated profiling and assessment results of various data sets as it pertains to Master Data. Ability to troubleshoot problem areas, identify gaps and issues, and remediate. Ability to provide necessary business context and objectives to enable architects, technical and business system analysts to formulate and implement technical solutions. High level/advanced proficiency of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio).
