Position Overview :
Newton, MA fixed hybrid schedule, 3 days in office

The Senior Director, Controller of Accounting Operations, is the relationship manager and leader of the accounting and accounts receivable teams that support the senior living operations. You will have complete oversight of all aspects of the general ledger, month-end close processes, and accounting for each site location of the organization. This position will lead a team of approximately 6 managers and 20 accounting and finance professionals, each controlling the general ledger of the communities within their portfolios.

In addition to oversight of the senior living accounting team, you will also oversee 10+ individuals on the accounts receivable team. You will be responsible for improving the efficiency of our entire receivable process by driving best practices in billing, reporting and collections. Your team will act as the liaison between billing, collections and sales operations to resolve customer escalations and provide upstream feedback as the team works to streamline processes.

Work Mode : Based in Newton, Hybrid.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Relationship Management

  • Foster strong relationships with senior management to ensure alignment and support for financial initiatives.
  • Supervise and develop the accounting and accounts receivable teams, managing work allocation, training, and problem resolution to build high-functioning team dynamics.
  • Continue to build and develop accounting and accounts receivable departments and teams that are customer service oriented, partners to the business, with an infrastructure that will support growth.

Strategic Planning and Oversight

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the company's strategic plan, ensuring financial alignment with business goals.
  • Create and implement action plans and organize resources to achieve desired outcomes, setting clear deadlines for completion.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Oversee the general ledger and manage all month-end close processes and technical accounting, ensuring accurate analysis and timely reporting of financial results.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of month-end close reconciliations and financial analyses, focusing on high-risk accounts to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Prepare and review variance analyses for management, providing insights into financial performance.

Compliance and Internal Controls

  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) procedures and maintain robust internal controls for all processes.
  • Direct technical accounting research and draft position papers on final accounting treatments.

Process Improvement and Efficiency

  • Monitor and streamline month-end close and business transaction processes, specifically those that impact day-to-day operations across departments, including payroll and accounts payable.
  • Collaborate with internal customers to resolve disputes and validate or address customer deductions.

Routines, Systems and Best Practices

  • Evaluate and implement best practices for ERP and other financial systems, focusing on accounting policies and procedures that strengthen internal controls.
  • Provide support for the preparation of owner packages.
  • Assist the tax department with tax provision and compliance matters.
  • Ensure timely and effective collecting of funds owed to the company.

Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
  • Minimum of eight years of experience, including a blend of both public and private sector experience
  • Significant experience of progressively increasing responsibility in a similar capacity
  • Strong technical accounting acumen and well versed in US GAAP and a general understanding of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting
  • Leadership experience in organizing, planning and executing projects from conceptualization through implementation across multiple internal and external reporting and organizational lines
  • Ability to remain positive under pressure and to motivate team members
  • Proven ability and continued drive to mentor and develop staff
  • Passion for understanding processes and continuous process improvement with an ability to innovate and provide proposals to streamline, enhance, and automate scalable processes
  • Critical thinking, detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to handle multiple deliverables at one time in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to apply new methodologies that satisfy systematic and scalable processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and ancillary business systems as well as Microsoft Office
  • The preferred candidate will have the following experience:
  • Public accounting
  • Mid-size to large SEC registrants operations
  • Workday, Financial Data Management module
  • Consolidations

Additional Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CPA or CMA preferred
