We are seeking a Director of Domestic Tax to lead and manage all aspects of U.S. federal income tax as it relates to the responsibilities of federal compliance, planning and governance. Managing all tax aspects of limited partnership investments is an important part of this leadership role. This role will oversee all aspects of the entire tax life cycle. Additionally, this role will participate in thought leadership by performing tax research and engaging in complex and uncertain tax legislation considerations.

This role will have management responsibilities of direct reports and will be responsible for the continued pursuit of operational excellence across the Tax Division, including partnering with peer leaders on technology and automation initiatives. This hybrid in-office position is located in Chicago, Illinois.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Lead all activities in relation to U.S. federal tax compliance, planning and governance, as it relates to corporate regular income tax and corporate alternative minimum tax, including directing staff with full responsibility for performance and development in accordance with CNA's Winning Behaviors.
  2. Lead all tax compliance activities in relation to the management and analysis of limited partnership investments, including collaboration with CNA’s investment team.
  3. Manage the administration and execution of U.S. federal and limited partnership K-1 software in support of tax compliance responsibilities.
  4. Manage the U.S. federal income tax impacts to the tax provisions, partnering with the tax accounting and reporting team.
  5. Manage expectations of all internal and external stakeholders in relation to tax compliance and planning initiatives, including collaborating with investments, finance, treasury, legal and other stakeholders.
  6. Manage the research of tax technical issues and present interpretations with recommendations to senior tax leadership. Analysis includes the impact to the entire tax life cycle.
  7. Participate in the evaluation of impacts of proposed U.S. federal tax legislative changes and evolving tax transparency requirements.
  8. Partner with peers to implement tax planning initiatives, drive operational improvements and ensure operational achievement.
  9. Support M&A transactions across the business.
  10. Deliver professional and timely services to internal and external customers.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Dedicated corporate tax professional with in-depth technical knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and all varieties of IRS tax guidance, in addition to a strong working knowledge of income tax accounting guidance. Exposure to insurance taxation is a plus.
  2. Ability to be resilient working in a dynamic, fast paced and informal internal environment while dealing with an often ambiguous and fluid external tax world.
  3. Strong executive leadership presence and effective presentation and storytelling skills.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to make the complex simple.
  5. Excellent analytical, technical and problem-solving skills.
  6. Ability to utilize software functionality to efficiently extract, analyze and review tax data to effectively support business recommendations.
  7. Will to upskill and explore technology and automation, develop creative solutions and drive process improvement ideas to completion.
  8. Detail oriented and self-motivated individual who can work independently.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills including ability to work effectively within a team environment and partner well with leaders at all levels of the organization.
  10. Ability to drive change management and influence tax, finance and business professionals.

Education and Experience

  1. Minimum of ten years of public accounting and industry corporate tax experience. Insurance tax experience is highly preferred.
  2. Tax accounting and reporting experience as it relates to ASC 740.
  3. Corptax software experience is required.
  4. K-1 Aggregator and Workday for Finance software experiences are highly preferred.
  5. Exposure to and effective usage of technology applications, including M365, ETL and visualization tools.
  6. Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Master of Science in Taxation degree is a plus.
  7. Certified Public Accountant designation.
