Senior Medical Lab Scientist

The Senior Technologist in Chemistry:
- Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor of the section.
- Performs analytical tests on specimens to provide information to medical staff for diagnostic or interpretative purposes in a timely manner.
- Performs tests following established policies and procedures.
- Serves as a resource to other medical technologists.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing all duties and responsibilities of Medical Technologist I and II.
- Making judgments as to sample suitability; performing test procedures on specimens, including selection of proper test procedures, reagents, controls, and instruments; calculating test findings using mathematical formulas and conversion tables; and evaluating the validity of test results.
- Reporting to supervisor any unusual findings for final decision concerning release of results. Recording test results either manually or electronically into the computer.
- Operating instruments such as analytical balance, multi-channel analyzers, and other specialized analyzers. Aiding in preventive maintenance as well as troubleshooting equipment malfunction.
- Preparing reagents according to prescribed directions. This may involve weighing dry and liquid materials, reconstituting lyophilized materials and other chemical substances. Evaluating results of quality control procedures and either taking corrective action within the purview of position or advising Supervisor.
- Providing orientation, instruction, and training of Chemistry Lab operations and procedures to laboratory staff, new employees, and medical staff, as directed by Supervisor. Monitoring and evaluating other medical technologists' performance and competencies as directed by Supervisor.
- Serving as acting laboratory supervisor when supervisor is absent from the area.
- Recommending appropriate policy and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responding to and aiding in resolving any unsafe conditions.
- Overseeing operation of analytical instruments. Performing or scheduling preventative maintenance and troubleshooting as required. Communicating all equipment malfunctions or operational problems to supervisor.
- Understanding and following established safety measures (including infection control and hazardous material) to minimize hazards related to chemicals, fires, corrosive materials, explosives, and biohazards. Notifying supervisor of unsafe conditions.
- Performing and managing data associated with instrument and method evaluations and correlations as directed by supervisor. Rotating as needed to other areas (or benches) within Core Lab. This includes performing duties related to stock room operation (inventoring reagents, ordering, preparing and distributing supplies), or Front Office (processing paperwork and specimens, answering telephones, communicating test results).
- Maintaining and assisting medical technicians in maintaining regulatory compliance in all aspects of specimen handling and testing.
- Performing other duties or projects as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Lab Science, or chemical, physical, or biological science.
- Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience as MT2 (or equivalent) in high complexity testing.
OR
- MT2 at MGH
- Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty.
- Total of two consecutive years of performance that meet expectations with 1 at the MT2 level, including twenty-four hours of documented continuing education in previous two years according to lab-specific policy.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
- All of the skills and abilities required for Medical Technologist II.
- Demonstrates advanced level of analytical problem solving.
- Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of department policies and procedures, test principles, and equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
- Ability to perform as leader (in absence of supervisor) providing direction, guidance, and training to staff in their area.
- Ability to recognize where assistance is needed and to take initiative in meeting those needs.
- Maintains technical competencies. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage workflow.
- Strong independent judgment; ability to respond to urgent situations appropriately.
- Demonstrates ability to work well under pressure, make appropriate decisions, and provide clear instructions.
- Ability to pay consistent attention to detail and maintain appropriate written and online documentation.
- Demonstrates customer-focused service skills.
- Able to handle sensitive employee and patient information.
- Demonstrates basic skills in Human Resource principles and practice.
- Advanced knowledge of safety policies and procedures specific to the lab.
Working Conditions:
Working environment is a clinical laboratory. Staff handles potentially biohazardous body fluid samples (e.g., blood, urine, CSF) from patients and animals (research samples). Work is performed in a highly structured laboratory in which protective clothing (including personal protective garment and gloves) must be worn. Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds and perform repetitive movements. No food or drink is allowed in laboratory working areas. Environment may also be noisy or crowded, with temperature variations.
