Function

The City of Ankeny is searching for an Information Technology Director to lead our IT Department. This position performs work under general direction; to provide leadership, planning, and management for all areas of information technology and to ensure all systems and data are secure. Major activities include: system and network administration and security, VoIP phone system maintenance and administration, technical support to all departments, database management, technology research and development, and computer training coordination.

The salary range is $119,904 - $160,911 plus an excellent benefit package. The hiring salary will be dependent on the candidate's qualifications. Post offer background check and drug screen required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and provides administrative and technical leadership in managing and coordinating information systems and services, geographical information systems, and data/voice communications activities.
  • Provides technical support services to user employees by researching hardware and software products, responding to computer questions, procuring and installing hardware and software and troubleshooting system problems.
  • Develops, manages and maintains the City’s Local Area Network (LAN) system. Coordinates City’ involvement in Wide Area Network (WAN) systems as needed.
  • Consults with management to define information requirements, system capacity, project priorities and computer/phone equipment purchases.
  • Evaluates and recommends changes to existing computer systems and system components, and directs implementation of approved changes.
  • Creates computer software training materials. Directly trains or coordinates training of employees on specialized or standardized programs and related hardware.
  • Plans and administers comprehensive database and strategic computerization plan.
  • Coordinates purchase and maintenance of all computer and phone system hardware and software programs.
  • Provides personnel management for the IT department; including the selection, training, scheduling, and evaluation of performance.
  • Prepares, implements and administers annual departmental budget consistent with City’s service priorities in operations and capital programs.
  • Researches and disseminates information on new technologies to users.
  • Assists in preparing special reports, projects, and budget items for the City Manager’s Office.

Entry Requirements and Skills

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science or management information systems or a closely related field and five (5) years progressive experience in a database environment, including experience with local and wide area networking.

Comprehensive knowledge of management information systems and related software and hardware; well-developed skills in evaluating user needs, system requirements, technical data and products; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; skill to assess and solve problems; ability to perform advanced mathematical techniques; ability to train employees; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers, vendors and the public.

Required Special Requirements

Shall be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.
