Summary: BMS is seeking an experienced and results-oriented Senior DevOps Engineer. This position is a hands-on technical practitioner reporting to the Director of SRE Cloud Operations and based in our Princeton NJ location. As Senior DevOps Engineer, you will work with development teams, service providers, business partners, cyber security, and other technical teams to deliver cloud solutions and manage operations in support of BMS business applications in the AWS, Azure, and GCP cloud environments. Responsibilities will include architecture, design, implementation, optimization, and support services. Areas of focus will include cloud operations and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices, including automation and optimization of mission and business-critical applications and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance, and security.
Position Requirements:
- Hands-on knowledge of cloud operations in a multi-cloud environment with advanced skills in one or more cloud platforms (AWS preferred, Azure or GCP).
- Provide guidance to internal development teams on cloud architecture, engineering, and operational standards by identifying appropriate use of cloud operational best practices and ensuring they are followed.
- Automation advocate - you truly believe in removing operational load with software. Ability to automate manual processes and write code to expedite detection and mitigation of issues in the environment.
- Audit and report on cloud services consumption, and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Evaluate effectiveness of the cloud solutions and make recommendations for improvement.
- Work with DevOps teams on projects as the expert on reliability, performance, and efficiency.
- Support and use the DevOps delivery model and Agile project delivery methodology.
- Understand cloud usage costs and FinOps practices and deliver cloud cost optimization solutions.
- Ability to train and educate teams on cloud standards and evaluate company standards against industry best practices and technology changes.
- Collaborate with other technical groups (Cloud Engineering, Cyber, Network, etc.) on technology issues and solutions.
- Work with Cyber Security team to maintain security and data protection in the cloud and coordinate remediation of issues using Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) tools.
- Understand cloud application architecture and provide analysis on high-availability and disaster recovery options to clients.
- Use Jira and Confluence to manage project deliverables and document processes.
- Serve as a senior-level technical contact for enterprise customers and assure they realize full benefit of cloud services.
- Manage incidents, requests and implement changes leveraging ITIL tools and processes.
- Take appropriate actions to resolve issues and communicate the solution or action plan to the clients.
Technical and Professional Expertise:
- 5+ years of operations experience (management of critical infrastructure systems) in a data center or public/private cloud environment with a minimum of 3 years professional hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud providers.
- Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) concepts and practices.
- In-depth knowledge of AWS services i.e., EC2, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch, Load Balancer, RDS, VPN, Route 53, etc.
- Strong scripting skills in at least one language, i.e., Python, Node.js, Ruby, PowerShell, Bash, etc.
- Experience with deploying, supporting and monitoring new and existing services, platforms, and application stacks.
- Creating, updating, and debugging cloud infrastructure via infrastructure-as-code, such as CloudFormation (preferred) or Terraform.
- Proven technical knowledge of Cloud infrastructure, software architecture and cloud computing.
- Knowledge of AWS Well Architected Framework and Tools.
- Experience implementing AWS high-availability architecture, disaster recovery and backup solutions, monitoring, patching, performance/capacity planning and security remediation.
- Demonstrated ability to think tactically and strategically about solutions to business, product, and technical challenges.
- Experience using Jira, creating issues and managing project deliverables through stories, tasks and using agile scrum processes and sprints to achieve objectives.
- Motivated self-starter, able to get productive quickly and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills (content creation such as whitepapers, proof of concepts, PowerPoint presentations, etc.).
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels in the organization.
- Hands-on technical practitioner and individual contributor.
Skills – Preferred:
- Strong knowledge of Linux & Windows OS and familiarity with DB concepts and operations.
- Familiarity with native or third-party cloud optimization tools such as AWS Compute Optimizer, Cloudability, Azure Advisor, etc.
- Experience with the ITIL processes of Incident (including Critical Incident Management), Problem, Change Management, and Integrated Service Level Management.
- Experience with building an automated build pipeline, continuous integration, and continuous deployment (CI/CD) and Agile project delivery methodology.
- Experience with source code control repositories.
- Demonstrate knowledge in AWS or Azure Cloud and Internet technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, Web architecture and design including working knowledge and hands-on experience of VPC, AWS Transit VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect methodologies.
- Knowledge of IP networking, VPN's, DNS, load balancing and firewalling.
Preferred Certification Requirements:
- AWS Solution Architect or SysOps Administrator Certificate; Associate level.
- Any AWS Professional certification highly desired.
- Any Azure certification a plus.
Preferred Education Requirements:
- BS level technical degree in Computer Science or Engineering or commensurate experience.
