Environmental Health Technician (Seasonal Mosquito Sprayer) - Beaufort County Health Department

Description of Work

This is a temporary seasonal mosquito control position at the Beaufort County Health Department. This position will conduct mosquito spraying at night in areas designated by mosquito control staff within the department. Work involves:

  • Operating a pickup truck with a truck mounted mosquito sprayer applying pesticides to control mosquito populations.
  • Reading pesticide labels and following labeled directions, loading pesticides into the sprayer, and keeping accurate records of spraying activities.
  • Responsible for proper use of chemical spill kits if needed and proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of pesticides.
  • Travel throughout all of Beaufort County as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Preference given to applicants currently licensed with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services- NC Pesticide Board as a Public Pesticide Operator with Category B (Public Health) license. Applicant must be willing and able to obtain a Category B license if needed.

License and Certification Requirements

Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Hours of Work

Work hours will vary dependent upon mosquito populations for the months of June through October. Applicant must be available 7 days a week if needed. Spraying times are generally between the hours of 6:00 PM and 12:00 AM and are weather dependent. Work hours generally will not exceed 28 hours a week maximum, but no number of hours is guaranteed on a weekly basis. Some part-time staff will serve as substitutes when current staff is not available to work. In the event of an emergency or disaster, staff may be required to work extended hours to control mosquito populations. No benefits are offered with this position.

Pre-employment drug screening, background check, driving record, and/or credit check will be required.
