Worcester Health Care for the Homeless (WHCH) (formally known as HOAP) provides trauma-informed medical and behavior health services to individuals experiencing homelessness. The goal is to create a welcoming, empowering, and dignified medical home for those we serve. Our team-based approach provides care in our newly renovated clinic located at 199 Chandler Street as well as various outreach clinics within the City of Worcester. In addition to medical and behavior health services, patients can access case management, recovery coaches, and Office Based Assisted Treatment (OBAT) for substance-use disorder.
Job Description:
The Recovery Coach provides peer recovery support services to patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and will assist patients in achieving sustained recovery.

  • Facilitates patient access to recovery-oriented substance use disorder treatment, resources, and community recovery groups.
  • Assists the team to promote and coordinate care in a positive, supportive manner.
  • Establishes and maintains effective and timely communications with health care team, community-based organizations, other FHCW service areas, and various support service providers.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of community culture to address the barriers to successful recovery, better tailor health messages, and provide links to community resources and treatment options.
  • Provide support at outreach clinics and events.
  • Provide Home/Shelter/Community visits as needed.
Educational Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associates Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
  • Completion of the Recovery Coach Academy required
Experience Required:
  • Must have lived experience with substance use disorder.
  • Two years of experience in a healthcare or substance abuse program support preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency required.
Professional Licensure/Special Skills and Certification Required:
  • Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) required, or able to obtain within six (9-12) months from date of hire.
  • Position requires local travel; valid Massachusetts Driver License and access to transportation required.
  • CPR/BLS required.

  • Willingness to be flexible in the development of new methods of health service delivery.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information in a highly confidential manner.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with patients, families, visitors, co-workers, health care professionals, funders and other regulatory agencies.
  • Bilingual in English and another language appropriate to the health center's patient population preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision, and to plan, coordinate, and carry out those tasks necessary to meet the job responsibilities.
  • Awareness of resources available within the health center to accommodate the needs of patients.
  • Commitment to providing cost conscious, fiscally responsible, timely, efficient, effective, safe, patient-centered, culturally competent, equitable, and participatory health care.
  • Processes personal health information in accordance with FHCW HIPPA policies and procedures.

Reporting Relationship:
Reports directly to the Lead Case Manager
