Overview

The Director, Technical Operations Transformation at Atlas Air plays a pivotal role in driving operational excellence and efficiency within the Technical Operations department. The primary responsibility of this role is enabling structured problem solving: finding the right problems to solve, designing the right solutions, and building the right implementation plans. The expected result is successful delivery of a portfolio of strategic projects that improve both financial and operational performance.

This role requires a dynamic leader who can align internal/external stakeholders with diverse perspectives, context switch to manage competing priorities, and either guide organizational strategy or serve as an individual contributor depending on what's needed. While this role reports into the Strategy & Transformation organization, it has a dotted reporting line into the Vice President of Technical Operations and will serve as a member of the Technical Operations leadership team.

Responsibilities

Business Analysis

  • Analyze operational and financial data to develop and investigate hypotheses about performance drivers in aircraft maintenance, engineering, and supply chain - focused on complex decisions with many tradeoffs, multiple teams involved, and downline impacts.
  • Translate pain points, anecdotes, observations, current state processes, and KPIs into clearly scoped opportunities for new and/or more clearly defined transformation projects.
  • Estimate financial value and operational impact of transformation projects, specifying value levers and how/where outcomes will translate to Atlas P&L.

Process Improvement

  • Map current state business processes with an emphasis on evaluating how Atlas makes key decisions, both strategic and operational.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to design future state business processes and identify what needs to happen to make the change a reality.
  • Inform the design of quantitative models to guide better decisions and technology to enable future state operational workflows.
  • Plan change management activities required for value capture, including communications, employee training, and technology cutovers.

Strategic Planning

  • Manage a large portfolio of high-value projects aimed at transforming inventory planning and management, maintenance programs and planning, maintenance and procurement contracts, frontline resource planning, and more.
  • Build comprehensive business cases to substantiate ROI, vet plans, and secure funding for transformation projects.
  • Lead projects and teams through PMO framework, ensuring progression according to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
  • Document project risks and dependencies, then work across the enterprise to mitigate these proactively so transformation delivery timelines stay on track.
  • Guide operational leaders and internal/external resources during project build and activation phases.
  • Respond to roadblocks quickly, escalating requests for attention, action, resources, or funding to the appropriate audiences.

Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as a member of and trusted advisor to the Technical Operations leadership team, focused on driving departmental activities toward achieving company goals.
  • Align diverse stakeholders around a single vision, set of priorities, and understanding of portfolio finances, timelines, risks, and status.
  • Organize updates and narratives for Steering Committee meetings that include operational leaders, the Atlas executive leadership team, members of the Atlas Board of Directors, and other PE investors.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Advanced degree - MBA or quantitative field (ex. economics, operations research, statistics, data science, industrial engineering) - preferred.
  • 7-12 years of experience, including 3+ years managerial experience.
  • Experience in aviation operations strongly preferred - ideally in consulting, strategy, analytics, continuous improvement, or operations planning functions.
  • Understanding of aircraft maintenance, engineering, and supply chain operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of best practices in data analytics and technology preferred.
  • Experience leading multiple large ($1mil+) projects through analysis, planning, execution, and activation.

Skills:

  • Strong financial acumen, data fluency, and data storytelling.
  • Executive-level thought partnership to drive strategy without formal authority.
  • Open-minded questioning, 'what would need to be true for this to work?', especially for complex processes involving many teams and decisions with interdependent tradeoffs.
  • Management consulting to discover value creation opportunities, formalize project scopes, build business cases, identify dependencies and risks, and resource project teams.
  • Project management best practices across all lifecycle phases.
  • Adaptable communication across highly diverse stakeholder groups ranging from frontline employees to Board of Directors.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery to senior leadership.
  • Independence and a desire to function autonomously with limited direction.
  • Data structuring and analysis through SQL, Python, R, Excel, or similar.

Salary Range: $135,500 - $183,000

Financial offer within the stated range will be based on multiple factors to include but not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset.
