The Health, Safety, and Environment Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs across the company and all our civil construction projects. The HSE Director manages and motivates a team of dedicated HSE Staff, providing support, creating guidelines and goals, and ensuring team members are properly trained and successful. The role involves proactively identifying potential safety hazards, assessing risks, and developing strategies to minimize accidents, injuries, and environmental impact. You will collaborate with various stakeholders, including project managers, superintendents and foremen, as well as clients and subcontractors, to ensure the successful integration of health, safety, and environmental practices throughout our operations.

TOTAL COMPENSATION: $139,700.00 to $221,900.00 annually depending on individualized compensation analysis including experience, skills, tenure, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and Implement Health, Safety, and Environmental Programs:
  2. Create and enforce policies, procedures, and guidelines to mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks.
  3. Design and implement programs that comply with local, state, and federal regulations and drive industry best practices.
  4. Direct and/or conduct regular audits, inspections, and assessments to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
  5. Develop emergency response plans and ensure all employees are trained to respond effectively.

Promote a Safety and Environmental Culture:

  1. Foster a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
  2. Provide leadership, guidance, and training to employees, subcontractors, and other stakeholders on safety protocols and best practices.
  3. Organize and conduct regular safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
  4. Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

Team Leadership and Development:

  1. Build and manage a high-performing team and foster a culture of excellence.
  2. Provide clear direction, set performance expectations, and ensure accountability across the HSE Team.
  3. Mentor and develop HSE Team, fostering their professional growth and success.
  4. Encourage a collaborative and inclusive work environment that values communication and promotes engagement.

Regulatory Compliance and Reporting:

  1. Stay up to date with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, laws, and industry standards.
  2. Ensure compliance with all applicable permits, licenses, and certifications.
  3. Prepare and submit accurate and timely reports to regulatory agencies as required.
  4. Collaborate with external agencies, consultants, and auditors during inspections and audits.
  5. Maintain relationships with Regulatory Agencies (OSHA, MSHA, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Colorado State Patrol) and other applicable agencies as a support partner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Proven experience in leadership and safety management, within the construction industry, with thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations, standards and reporting processes.
  2. Superior EQ, leadership, and communication skills with the ability to foster a safety-conscious culture within the organization.
  3. Effective negotiation and conflict management skills.
  4. High level organization, planning, prioritization, coordination, and the general ability to manage several moving parts over multiple projects at once.
  5. Attention to detail and the ability to analyze complex data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Experience with programs, training, and best practices related to construction safety issues.
  2. Combination of College & Technical training, cumulative field experience in civil construction, and hands-on construction experience in a lead position.
  3. Applicant will hold one or more of the following certifications: Construction Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety Manager – Construction (CSMC), Construction Health and Safety Management (CHSM), Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP).

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Excellent oral and written communications skills. This position requires the ability to communicate politely and proficiently in English with co-workers, customers and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: This job requires the ability to do math equations and summaries for reviewing and reporting statistical and budgetary information.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Strong computer skills are mandatory, significant experience and abilities with Microsoft Office Suite.

PHYSICAL: Daily driving and visiting projects, and job sites. Willing to wear respiratory protection, climb ladders, squat, and work in tunnels.

ENVIRONMENT: Office and field environment. The position also requires the operation of standard office and communication equipment.
