Job Title: Counselor for Youth Education and Cultural Development
Department: Youth Education
Reports To: Senior Director, Education and Innovation

General Functions :
The Counselor for Youth Education and Cultural Development will join a highly committed group of educators who work directly with youth in the development of their cultural awareness, academic competencies, and technological capabilities. This position will aid in advancing the overall development of youth, ages 5 through 19. The Counselor for Youth Engagement and Cultural Development will serve as the lead contact and consultant in response to student mental health needs with the result of helping to build the long-term well-being of each youth participant.
Duties and Responsibilities :

• Collaborate with youth participants and staff members in developing a positive mental health climate, in which each young person comes to know their strengths and capabilities and how to implement these meeting the challenges they face.
• Form strong and positive relationships and counseling alliances with youth participants, their families, and staff members through cultural support.
• Work alongside individual youth participants and small groups in helping them understand their strengths in resolving challenges.
• Support youth participants and their families to create culturally informed plans of personal development to become culturally aware individuals.
• Organize quarterly evening family events or workshops that support family wellness.
• Counsel individuals and small groups toward social and emotional resiliency.
• Provide group lessons that support cultural identity, health, and well-being.
• Serve as a consultant for parents and staff.
• Connect youth with resources that can address a higher level of care than what the YES department can provide.
• Respond effectively and proactively to the crises youth experience whether within or outside the YES department.
• Sustain consultative and collaborative relationships with staff members to help achieve a better understanding of the individual needs and strengths of youth participants during programming.
• Collaborate with Denełchin community to host celebrations that recognize youth participants during programming.
• Strive to create a preventive culture incorporating early identification and resolutions of the challenges youth participants face.
• Ability to provide culturally competent services through holistic culturally founded approaches that meet their unique Behavioral Health needs.
• Collect, enter, and maintain data.

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
• Competence in working within a milieu environment requiring participants to collaborate in achieving a positive socio-emotional climate.
• Demonstrated experience in a strengths-based solution focused approach to behavioral health care.
• Demonstrated experience in contributing to a highly integrated team that incorporates culture, socio-emotional, technology, and career focused approaches to youth development.
• Demonstrated experience in building and sustaining positive working relationships and alliances with youth and staff members.
• Demonstrated experience in contributing to a highly integrated team that incorporates culture, socio-emotional, technology, and career focused approaches to youth development.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient with computers and standard office equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions, exercise good judgment, and work independently with minimal supervision.

• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and prioritize workload.
• Strong public speaking, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications :

• Master's degree in counseling or a closely related field. The coursework should cover areas like counseling theories, human growth and development, group dynamics, assessment, research and evaluations, and ethics.
• Hold a Professional Counselor License for the State of Alaska or be in the process of applying.
• Two years of experience working with youth.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends in response to youth participants' needs or planned family events.
• Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal background check.

Preferred Qualifications :

• Doctoral degree in counseling or a closely related field.
• Experience working with Tribal organizations and/or within Alaska Native/American Indian communities.

Physical Requirements :
Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
