This position will be part of the Robotic Systems Development (RSD) team within the Central Technology Office (CTO). RSD explores the cutting-edge robotic technologies we develop and brings innovative solutions to life. Our diverse teams go beyond technology development, providing comprehensive solutions, services, and lifecycle support. This position is located in Holland, MI. This is a hybrid position requiring three days in-office and two days optional to work from home.

The base pay range for this role is estimated to be $82,000- 166,000 at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined by various factors such as work location, education, experience, knowledge, and skills.


Tasks and Qualifications:
Core Responsibilities:

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Develop advanced techniques for mapping, localization, and pose estimation of mobile robotic systems based on a variety of different sensors (camera, lidar, IMU, etc.)
  • Research and identify emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks that can transform our products and services.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop prototypes and proof-of-concept projects that showcase the feasibility and potential impact of novel concepts.
  • Influence product strategy, working with product managers, designers, and engineers to provide technical insights and contribute to product strategy discussions.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and leader within the team, providing guidance on best practices, architecture, and design principles.
  • Contribute to the long-term R&D roadmap, aligning with KION's goals and market trends.
  • Allocate 10% of your working time to pursue projects of your choice, enabling you to explore and experiment with new innovative ideas that enhance the team.
  • Travel up to 10% of work hours.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Graduate-level degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, with a substantial focus on research and innovation.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks (Rust and Python preferred).
  • Solid understanding of software development for highly multithreaded embedded systems.
  • Experience in robotics and lidar based perception.
  • Experience with agile development practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
