Job Title: Architect
Technical background and experience in development are crucial. The most important part of creating a solution architecture is selecting the appropriate technologies for product development or the technology stack. While there are many platforms, tools, and programming languages to choose from, the solution architect's job is to assess and compare all options to find the most suitable for the problem to be solved.
Strong communication skills are essential as the solution architect is a hybrid between a technical expert and a salesperson. The architect is required to listen, empathize, explain, advise, influence, and negotiate.
In-depth analysis skills are necessary, particularly regarding SQL data structures and business acumen. The best solution architects understand that technologies and methodologies are designed for larger scale activity and are skilled at using what is valuable while discarding what is worthless within the given context.
Solution shaping orientation is vital. The ideal architect will provide the right advice for the business results required, which may mean standing firm on decisions and not being persuaded by vendor hype or unwanted jargon. This may also involve communicating hard facts that organizations may not want to hear, focusing on the genuine needs of the company.
A calm, confident, and sensible approach to risk management and identification is required.
Project and resource management skills are important. While solution architects are not project managers, they support project management activities to ensure that resources, risks, and planning stay within the solution goals. They should be able to advise whether a specific solution is beneficial to the organization's goals, especially regarding timeframes and budget.
