Job Summary:
The HS&E Director will lead initiatives to ensure a safe work environment and promote sustainable practices within AGY. Primary responsibility is to improve HS&E behavior and compliance fostering a no excuses, no exceptions, continuous improvement HS&E culture at AGY. This role involves developing and implementing safety programs, environmental policies, and sustainability strategies that align with industry standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in environmental management, safety compliance, and a passion for promoting sustainable manufacturing practices.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Safety Management:
- Develop and manage safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA and other relevant standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate workplace hazards.
- Oversee training sessions on safety practices, emergency response, and hazard recognition.
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents, analyze root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections to ensure adherence to policies, documenting findings and recommending improvements.
Environmental Sustainability:
- Create and implement a sustainability strategy focusing on waste reduction, energy efficiency, and resource conservation.
- Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations regarding waste management, emissions control, and water usage.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments to identify areas for improvement.
- Promote sustainable practices within the organization, including recycling programs and energy-efficient equipment.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives.
Leadership and Communication:
- Serve as the primary interface with state and federal regulatory entities.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to safety and sustainability teams.
- Facilitate communication and training on safety and sustainability topics.
- Prepare and present reports on safety performance and sustainability initiatives to management.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and supply chain teams to integrate safety and sustainability into manufacturing processes.
- Engage stakeholders, including suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies, to promote safety and sustainability initiatives.
- Develop community engagement programs to highlight the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and safety.
Regulatory Compliance/Reporting and Documentation:
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and environmental standards, preparing and submitting required reports to regulatory bodies.
Scope & Responsibility:
Direct safety and environmental sustainability efforts for the plant, ensuring compliance with regulations, implementing best practices, and leading continuous improvement initiatives. Supervise staff and coordinate with contractors to maintain a safe and sustainable environment.
Competence, Education, training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or related field; Master’s preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management and environmental sustainability in manufacturing.
- Experience with Title V Air Emissions permits and compliance reporting.
- Preferred experience overseeing an onsite wastewater treatment facility.
- Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or sustainability (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001) preferred.
- Strong leadership, analytical, and interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple projects and teams.
- Proficient in safety management software, sustainability reporting tools, and MS Office.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations and safety codes.
- Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.
Position Type, Expected Work Hours and Travel:
Full-time salaried exempt position, 50 hours per week, with occasional hours outside normal hours for plant needs and emergencies. Travel is less than 10%.
Work Environment:
This role primarily takes place in a manufacturing environment. Employees may encounter moderate noise levels and are required to follow established safety policies and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
