The Property Accountant is responsible for full cycle accounting for the various properties that the company manages. Specific responsibilities include the reconciliation and preparation of monthly financial statements, daily interaction with onsite property managers, and adherence to accounting policies and procedures. This individual will utilize his/her unique set of skills and relationships to contribute to a dynamic and growing company.
Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs accounting functions for various development, residential, and commercial property portfolios.
  • Performs bank reconciliations and follows up on all outstanding items on a timely basis.
  • Reviews accounts payable for proper coding and releases invoices for check run.
  • Reconciles and reviews accounts receivable balance with onsite Community Managers.
  • Prepares detailed support schedules and reconciliations as required.
  • Prepares and submits for review timely and accurate monthly property financial statements with supporting schedules and commentary as needed.
  • Manages cash balances for assigned properties including releasing check runs, initiating wire requests, and performing owner distributions as required.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination and organization with external auditors for year-end audit work and prepares supporting schedules.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of assigned property budgets and property operations to be able to add effective variance commentary to the monthly financials statement package as required.
  • Maintains a proactive attitude by keeping Manager informed of all property activities and tasks being completed.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of vendor contracted services and management agreements for assigned properties.
  • Performs various special projects and tasks as required and/or requested.

Competencies/Required Skills/Abilities
  • Effective working knowledge (intermediate level or higher) of Microsoft Excel required.
  • Thorough knowledge of accrual basis accounting required, with experience in GAAP basis adjustments preferred.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills with internal and external clients as well as professionals within the department.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, sharing knowledge or training and mentoring peer-level team members.
  • Demonstrates professional leadership skills through effective work habits, attitude, inter-personal skills, initiative, and follow-through.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively under pressure with multiple and changing priorities and deadlines as evidenced by use of tact, maturity, interpersonal effectiveness, good judgement, and discretion.
  • Proactively seeks out additional responsibilities or ways to contribute to the group, including working independently on special projects and utilizing specialized knowledge of systems and procedures to enhance individual or group productivity, aid in problem solving/issue resolution, best practice documentation, and process improvement.
Required/Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience with property management applications including RealPage, MRI, or Yardi preferred.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of 25 lbs.; to facilitate vacuuming, moving office furniture, lifting of supplies and other items which may be required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be physically able to sit, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally.
  • Use hands/fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities required include depth, perceptions, and ability to adjust focus throughout the day.
  • The noise level is usually low.

Compensation, Benefits and Requirements
Salary for this position is highly competitive and commensurate with experience. The compensation structure includes a base salary, paid bi-weekly. This position qualifies to earn a 5% performance bonus, paid annually. This is a full-time, EXEMPT position located in at our MPM Corporate Office requiring 40 hours per work week. Additional or non-business hours and varying amounts of travel may be warranted based on the needs of the business.
