DUTIES :
Serve as a mentor in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Hewitt Writing and Reading Center (the HWRC), performing the following responsibilities:
(a) Engage in best practices to support students with writing and reading development
(b) Tutor in-person and online during daytime and evening HWRC hours
(c) Support writing across the disciplines program
(d) Attend professional development sessions
(e) Lead reading or writing workshops
(f) Assist in managing workshop support and tutoring scheduling
(g) Maintain accurate records of all mentoring, workshop, and related activities
(h) Assist with marketing and campus outreach
(i) Assist in upkeep of web-based and physical spaces
(j) This position will not work during summer and winter breaks between semesters.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :
Minimum :
1. Experience within higher education in teaching or best-practice tutoring of writing
2. Possession of a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with successful completion of Composition/Rhetoric, English Language Arts, or other writing-intensive undergraduate courses
3. Excellent written and oral communication skills
4. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and ability to gain proficiency with the Writing Center's web-based scheduling software as well as Microsoft TEAMS
Preferred (in addition to the minimum):
1. Possession of a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
2. Successful completion of Graduate-level courses in composition theory and practice.
3. Higher education experience teaching writing
4. Specialized training, certification, or higher education experience with English Language Learner (ELL)
support
5. Specialized training, certification, or higher education experience teaching or tutoring literacy and reading
strategies
6. Higher education experience in Writing Across the Curriculum or integrating writing into/across the
Disciplines
