Axle is seeking a Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Cancer Institute (NCI) located in Bethesda, MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

The contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute, Center for Cancer Research. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through the performance of support services.

Deliverables

  • Work products and documents relating to conducting laboratory-based research on the molecular biology of non-coding RNA pathways; study cultured human and animal cell lines, some of which may be derived from cancer tissue; analyze human and/or animal tissues with and without cancer.
  • Overseeing mouse colony and PCR-based genotyping of mouse strains; maintain stocks of all reagents and equipment; and organize chemicals, reagents, equipment, and common stocks in the laboratory.
  • Initiating, designing, and developing new projects or assays that can enable the Center for Cancer Research/Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to fulfill its responsibilities for advancement in cancer research and development of cancer diagnostics, cancer drugs, and cancer vaccines.
  • Interpreting the results of the initial analysis to reveal conclusions and shortcomings; identify pitfalls in the original choice of methods or experimental direction; and redirect the study to achieve improved results.
  • Ensuring that laboratory and staff members adhere to all safety laboratory regulations; establish laboratory guidelines for different sets of protocols; train new laboratory members.

Work Details

  • Provide expertise in and conduct manipulation of mouse embryos, including, but not limited to, isolation, fixation, dissection, and staining of mouse embryos from blastocyst to E18.5 developmental stages.
  • Show proficiency in the usage of equipment required for these experiments, such as a Covarius, Sonicator, Brioruptor, FACES, etc.
  • Conduct experiments related to immune system phenotyping, including, but not limited to, isolation of immune cells from mice, lethal irradiation from donor animals, immune cell transplantation, and FACS-based immunophenotyping.
  • Advance knowledge of the utilization of the scientific equipment required for these experiments, such as the Lonza Nucleofection system.
  • Conduct experiments involving standard molecular biology techniques such as western blot, northern blot, genotyping, RNA and DNA isolation, protein isolation, quantification immunoprecipitation, etc.
  • Support the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.
  • Conduct experiments that characterize non-coding RNA pathways in mammalian cells including, but not limited to qPCR, RNA-seq, CLIP-seq, variants, RIP, small RNA closing, and library preparation.
  • Manipulate the genome of mammalian cells using CRISPR-Cas9, including, but not limited to, the design and preparation of reagents.
  • Conduct immunostaining experiments in cultured cells and mouse tissues; proficiency in the use of equipment required for these experiments, such as confocal microscopes, and image analysis software.
  • Search scientific literature for new methods and procedures.
  • Provide, organize, and ensure the progress of scientific projects independently.
  • Support laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
  • Learn new laboratory techniques and procedures and train staff.
  • Work with laboratory members on their projects.

Masters

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Life Sciences, or Related Discipline

Skills

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in cell biology, molecular biology, and mouse genetics.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
