SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:
The Associate Translational Medicine Director develops and implements translational strategies for programs in early clinical development and continues to support clinical programs as they progress through the pipeline. The incumbent also helps to develop novel strategies to inform on dose, patient selection, and combination therapies. Additional objectives are to monitor disease with biomarkers. The incumbent is the functional expert for translational medicine in cross-functional drug development teams and leads external collaborations with partner companies and academic institutions.
This is an on-site role (Monday to Friday) based at our Alameda, CA location.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
- Leads the development of project-specific goals and objectives for the Translational Development group.
- Designs the translational strategy for individual pipeline drugs in clinical studies.
- Represents the Translational Medicine function in cross-functional development teams.
- Interacts with internal assay development groups and contract research organizations to implement biomarker development and testing.
- Interacts with commercial functions and academic institutions to provide scientific support and support company goals.
- Designs and facilitates implementation of the clinical biomarker strategies for company-sponsored clinical trials.
- Serves as subject matter expert for select technical biomarker solutions (flow cytometry or blood protein biomarkers and scientific discipline (immunology).
- Manages data analysis and, in collaboration with data management and bioinformatics group, delivers data and analysis for regulatory interaction and publications.
- Informs and collaborates with sample management staff to manage sample collection, shipment, and storage.
- Works cross-functionally within Exelixis and partners with external collaborators and vendors to achieve translational medicine goals.
- Analyzes results from translational medicine studies and communicates to the project teams' internal stakeholders.
- Interacts with pre-clinical groups to develop and implement an integrated translational medicine strategy.
- Provides state-of-the-art translational medicine solutions by keeping current on scientific and technological developments and may manage relationships with academic institutions or partner companies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in related discipline and a minimum of eleven years of related experience; or,
- Master’s degree in related discipline and a minimum of nine years of related experience; or,
- PhD degree in a related discipline and a minimum of five plus years of related experience; or,
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/The Ideal for Successful Entry into Job:
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry or the equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Experience participating in clinical oncology studies with molecular targeted or immunological therapies.
- Excellent communication skills, orally or in writing.
- Experience in providing presentations of scientific overviews and data in appropriate contexts for various types of meetings (internal and external).
- Embrace opportunities to learn and adapt to various processes that may be situation-specific.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with the translational medicine team.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Excellent team player to build strong relationships with cross-functional leaders and peers to enable integrated and impactful translational medicine solutions.
- Proven track record of success in translational research/translational medicine and scientific publications.
- Expertise in a relevant platform technology (immunohistochemistry, digital pathology, flow cytometry, or genetics), including assay development, data analysis, and clinical application, is required.
- Understanding of successful completion of translational projects and preparation of project-related publications.
- Effective communication skills to convey complex topics to senior management, external customers, and collaborators.
- Has a good understanding and application of technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques related to immunology.
- Has good general knowledge of other related disciplines.
- Applies strong analytical and communication skills.
- Good public speaking and presentation skills.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this position is $141,500 - $201,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate’s geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors.
