JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Systems Engineering family is responsible for the entire technical effort to evolve and verify solutions that satisfy client needs. The primary focus is centered on reducing risk and improving the efficiency, performance, stability, security, and quality of all systems and platforms.

The Principal Platform Engineer is a member of the Mainframe Performance team and is a highly technical position responsible for the overall performance of the Mainframe environment, including balancing resources across multiple CECs and analyzing and reporting on performance and tuning metrics. This position requires proven leadership skills to coordinate and lead initiatives regarding Performance & Tuning and effectively coordinate with various IT groups and Product Managers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. z/OS real time performance diagnostics and L2 production support in a large mainframe environment
  2. Identification of performance bottlenecks and their alleviation through z/OS components and application tuning
  3. Proactive, exceptions driven component performance management & optimization
  4. CPU, Memory, I/O, Network, CF, etc.
  5. Synergy with other performance SME - DB, CICS, Network, Storage, etc.
  6. Sysplex analysis and maintenance
  7. LPAR configurations design, and tuning
  8. Hiperdispatch/IRD, capping
  9. ThruPut Manager & Work Load Manager policy design
  10. Performance test configuration, analysis and support
  11. Improving mainframe cost effectiveness
  12. Batch workloads critical path prioritization
  13. Real-time performance monitoring
  14. Operations staff training in L1 performance diagnostics
  15. Provide consultative services to IT staffs on performance issues.
  16. Mitigates risk by following established procedures and monitoring controls, spotting key errors and demonstrating strong ethical behavior.
  17. Serves as a trusted coach or mentor within the organization.
  18. Communicates openly keeping everyone across the organization informed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of 8 years of related experience
  2. Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience
  3. Strong teamwork skills
  4. Expertise in z/OS performance diagnostics, problem resolution and proactive performance management
  5. Expertise with BMC Mainview
  6. Expertise in z/OS Workload Manager Policy design in a large Sysplex environment
  7. Expertise in ThruPut Manager
  8. Intermediate to strong SAS coding skills including SAS macros and SAS/GRAPH. Working knowledge of MICS and SAS/MXG
  9. Working knowledge of z/OS components – ASM, RSM, IOS, HSM, JES2, etc.
  10. Understanding of the functionality and performance aspects of z/OS secondary subsystems – DB2, CICS, MQ
  11. Ability to tune the above components to maximize the productive utilization of computer resources and improve cost effectiveness

  1. Performance Diagnostics, problem resolutions and proactive management in z/OS.
  2. z/OS components – ASM, RSM, IOS, HSM, JES2, etc.
  3. Solid production support background in the mainframe space
  4. Expertise with BMC Mainview, ThruPut Manager
  5. z/OS Workload Manager Policy design in a large Sysplex environment
  6. Strong SAS coding skills including SAS macros and SAS/GRAPH

NICE TO HAVE:

  1. Performance aspects of z/OS secondary subsystems – DB2, CICS, MQ
