Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
Students will gain experience in various medical diagnostic disciplines, including sample processing/routing, accessioning, storage, facilities, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, immunologic assays, robotics, and various lab equipment. Regular attendance is not just a requirement but also a crucial part of your role in the internship. Punctuality is also expected, as it ensures you can start your work promptly upon arrival at the lab. The work area will indicate the exact reporting times dictated by the current shift and workflow. Students will not work an overnight shift. Notify the laboratory supervisor or the designee at least one hour before an absence or late arrival to scheduled activities. Professional communication is not just a guideline but also a key aspect of workplace behavior. It is important to maintain this standard when interacting with coworkers, students, and staff. Notify the section supervisor if there is a change in major medical coverage. Follow all HIPAA, safety, and privacy policies as prescribed by the SRL Quality Office and lab-specific work areas. General training and precautions
Lab leadership in accordance with current SRL policies and procedures will provide all safety training.
Students will not manipulate, prepare, perform patient testing, or report out any results obtained from patient testing.
Clinical Instrument maintenance, "live" sample handling, and critical reagent preparation must performed be under direct supervision. Training and testing may only occur with archived clinical material, excess expired aliquots or material in route to disposal. All work within the LIMS will be directly supervised and directed. No passwords are to be shared between staff and students. Research and optimization projects will be assigned throughout the internship and presented to SRL staff through formal presentations, group discussions, or talking papers. Formal reports should include applicable formatting: Title, Authors and Affiliation, Abstract, Introduction/Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and Literature Cited. Use free time wisely to complete didactic or R&D assignments. Administrative areas and PC access are available on an as-needed basis. Students or interns will not be issued live database or LIMS access. All information stored on network drives, patient information, and proprietary methods are confidential and SRL intellectual property. No proprietary tools, SOPs, or electronic files must leave the building.
